I believe the general wisdom here is that the area around the shifters and any open spaces around the stereo and such, are not strong enough to screw a ram X grips mount to and mount a 7" tablet too... correct. (There is some ram mount stuff on sale on amazon

Get the stick on Ram Mount, should be plenty strong for a small tablet.

Revoked.... you mean the suction cup one or the glue on one?
Breththn , you did exactly what I wanted to do at first and possibly will do. My other idea was to use the diamond shaped base in front of the main shifter to the left of the transfer case shifter and basically block the ash tray. I dont smoke. How hard is it to get that facia off?

I don't have photos with me but can post up later - I drilled the ram mount on the center console just ahead (toward the dash) of the cup holders on the passenger side.. essentially just below the low-high range lever. it holds a full size ipad 2 and is rock solid with the 4 screws that come with it. the arm is 6 inches long..

I'd recommend the dual suction cup mount, with a piece of foam between the arm and the dash. Works perfectly with a full sized ipad under the harshest conditions.

now that I have a ram mount suction cup thing in my hands.... and I attached to my 8 seater hard wood dining room table and all but picked the table up with the ram mount... I stopped because I think I would have actually broken the plastic part of the ram mount before it lost suction... I am fairly sure it will hold most of my toys securely while running on the highway. And I drive as slow as possible off road. Now I am waiting for the rest of my ram mount stuff to show up. In the end we will have 2 phones an ipad and a 7" windows tablet going while we are on our road trip this summer
