Following the ONSC trip to URE in December, I opened my front diff and was greeted by what looked like a Wendy's Frosty. Cirbo explained to me that water had likely gotten in through the breather when I crossed the rain swollen stream.

Not wanting to have to change the gear oil after every trip through deep water and not having the $$$$ for a lift and bigger tires, I researched to see what my options were.

I stumbled upon a thread where the guys seemed pretty ingenious. Click HERE to see the thread on the Outer Limits 4x4 board.

Unfortunately, my local Advance Auto does have/can't find what I need to proceed - namely the "1/8 bsp tube spike with 5/8 spike" referenced by the poster. It seems what I need are two M10 1.25 fittings to screw into the diffs and attach tubing to.

Has anyone else done this or something similar and can give me some guidance? If not, I'll post on the 40's tech page but I thought I'd throw it out to the group first.

David

Oh yeah, I would just use a hose barb and hose clamp, not all that compression junk.

My .02

Thanks Ramon!

Looks like a great write-up but strange that steps 7 and 9 are left blank. Perhaps that is when you stop and drink a beer.

I'll be sure to take some pics and will do my best to post a decent thread on the project.

Hadn't thought through needing to relocate the breathers for the transfer case and steering box. Another project to add to my list.

Now if I can ever finish my Warn 8274 rebuild...

Are the diff breathers on the 40 different from the 80???

All I did was use some fuel line and run them up into the engine bay with some old school fuel filters on the end.

I'm guessing the breathers on your 40 are similar to those on my Pig. I looked at using barbed fittings, but during a 'heck, I wonder if this will work' I hose clamped some regular 'ole fuel line to by axle breathers after I removed the stock cap...and they are stuck on like glue. I pulled on the fuel line to the point it started to deform and I called it good. They have held for about a year even though I haven't driven the Pig much in that time.

Ive had my 80's vented for several years now. The front runs up to the battery box via fuel line, capped w/a filter and the back follows the fuel filler neck up as high as possible and I reused the OEM vent.

just fuel line and hose clamps, barbed fitting on the air/oil filter.

i have them extended on my 62... I will take a pic for you

David - I did the same thing as lt1fire and others are saying with basic fuel line, hose clamps, and fuel filters. Mine both run up to the engine bay near the top of the cowl. I figure if I have water coming over the cowl I have too many other issues to worry about at that point... It's an easy mod w/ less than 1.5 hours of time including the trip to NAPA for the supplies.

barbed fitting on the fixture to prevent pipe from wiggling off, needs no clamp under no pressure
