Just thought I'd share this install pic. The separator fits right in the stock separator bracket on my BJ42. It sits above the frame rails, although the more I look at it, the more I'm convincing myself that a wayward rock is going to find itself braking that plastic bowl!

I'll fab some kind of shield for it at any rate. ;)
I changed the engine fuel filter at the same time (it was clean after 3+ years), bled the system (I bled 2l at the top filter bleed screw, just to be sure) as well for the first time, so that was a neat learning experience. Started it up and let it run for 10 minutes just to be sure of no issues. Nice little afternoon project. Working with diesel is sure a lot nicer than gas. Now I know what " annointing wth oil feels like"!

What happened to the old separator? Does this one have an electrical connection for the filter light?

The old separator was badly rusted and had been disconnected by the PO. I found it in the parts box, took it apart and the sensor was all busted up. This one does not have a sensor. I simply plan to drain it every month or so. Our diesel is pretty clean up here as you know Charles.

Diesel is generally pretty good even down here in Central America. I've only had the separator light come on once in 20 years of diesel 'Cruiser ownership.

The problem is that if you get a load of bad diesel you need to know right away if there is water in there before it messes up the injectors. I bought a new OEM separator for the '55 and wired it in to a light on the dash. I'm still trying to decide on the FJ45LV as I'd like a separator/filter/primer pump all in one unit (the rotary 3B doesn't have a primer pump on it). I saw one on a Land Rover TDi 110 in Costa Rica this weekend at Paul's shop that would work really nicely.

Good point Charles, thanks. I know Racor sells other models that have sensor plugs; I can't recall if my model has a replacement drain plug that will accept a water sensor. I believe they also sell models with built-in plungers, but they get to be much taller units as a result, which means you need to install them on the fire-wall or somewhere other than the frame rail I would think. I wanted to keep my separator at the lowest point to make draining easier without introducing air into the system. At least, that's my theory anyway.;)

Good theory! I had issues with air locks in the '55 while using an Racor up on the firewall. All those issues disappeared after going with the OEM separator on the frame rail.
