My steering rack has been leaking on the output shafts for years.. literally. However yesterday the rack blew all the fluid out when my wife started the vehicle and turned it in cold weather with everything cold. I filled it back up later yesterday in the shop and it did not leak the fluid out. So I'm guessing the combination of high visa fluid building very high pressure and the rack being very cold must have blown past a shrunk seal. It blew out enough to hit the drivers front tire.
I lost my job last week and don't really have the money to buy a $550 rack. But my Rack bushings are totally shot as well I discovered while testing yesterday. The whole rack moves like an inch or so.
So if I read this situation correctly, I have three options:
1. Find a used rack that may be leaking but has never blown out and purchase new rack bushings
2. Put power steering conditioner in the rack I have and see if it lasts a while and purchase new rack bushings
3. Buy a new rack with bushings and bite the bullet even though it is very expensive for me right now.
This is our daily driver and the only vehicle we have that our family of 8 can fit in. 1999 Landcruiser 100.
