Im about to rent a 50' towable boom lift, and one of the companies that has them for rent locally won't rent to anyone that doesn't have a 3/4 ton pickup "due to stopping power".

The manlift weighs 4800 lbs with a tongue weight of 350 lbs. A 2005 LX470 should handle this with ease, correct? I know the fuel mileage will drop to single digits, but the 20 mile round-trip to my home and back shouldn't be an issue.

Should I press to rent and tell them my LX is fine, or should I look elsewhere?

Is the trailer 50'? If so, I would not want to tow anything that long in a diesel, much less a gasser. If not, how long is the trailer?

Weight wise, yes that should be doable, but you need to have a brake controller. If you do not have a BC, I would not expect many folks to rent anything to you over 1000lbs.

Dimensions stowed for towing are 26' long, 6' tall, 6' wide.

From a trailer length/weight and tongue weight perspective, your LX is fine. It's almost certain that a trailer from a rental place will have surge brakes and not electric brakes, so you probably don't need a brake controller on your LX. Take them the LX owner's manual showing the relevant towing specs, and they should be ok with a rental if the towable lift has the surge brake hitch that's shown in the photo.

Yep, the data sheet for the lift lists -
Brakes Hydraulic Surge

Good idea.

This changes things, do the above and you shoudl be fine. Especially if you tell them how/when you are going.

Side note, what are you doing that you need a 50 ft boom?

Turning up a point to point 16.5mile/27.5km airfiber link between a 300 foot tall building downtown and my house out in the countryside. Before committing to mounting the 650mm 30dbi dish on my roof with its tripod and mast(and drilling holes and making a mess), Im going to go up in a boom lift and test the link to see if it actually works. If it works, ill pivot the boom lift over to my roof, mount the tripod+mast and dial in the dish.

Ive towed a 35 foot boom before at another house i owned with an acura mdx. zero issues and i was able to get up and pressure wash the house easily. i was surprised to see the 50 footer had a weight of 4800 lbs but with the added reach, it makes sense.

That's cool. I live in the country as well and have a WISP. It works pretty well, although I am not 16 miles away. I do send my connection down to my shop 3-400 feet way using some Ubiquiti NanoStations Amazon.com: Ubiquiti NanoStation locoM2 2.4GHz Indoor/Outdoor airMax 8dBi CPE: Computers & Accessories, they work amazing actually.

UBNT makes the AirFiber 5X gear Im using for this link. Surprisingly, UBNT is a competitor to my employer.... ;-) But we don't make "inexpensive" wifi gear. Ive also got a set of UBNT PowerBeams that work surprisingly well. Hopefully this shot works and I can get 250megabit pulled out to the house instead of the dismal 6meg DSL i currently have.

Dang!! I'd like to get anywhere close to that. Our WISP is stuck at 8/4. My colleagues are about to get Google Fiber, I guess it's a trade off for living in the country on acreage. On the plus side, I love fresh eggs :)

Im only 2 miles from the nearest Time Warner headend, but they won't budge on extending service to my neighborhood. Oh well, I can do better ;-)

Louisville has been selected for both Google Fiber and AT+T GigaPower but the process is just beginning. I doubt it will ever make its way out here. My 6meg DSL is actually delivered over fiber, but AT&T refuses to upgrade the electronics from something that is literally from the late 90s. Very unfortunate.

Ill get some pics of the LX towing this boom tomorrow if things work out like I plan.

Yes, please keep us posted, I'd like to see it being towed as well as the result.

The LX hauled this big beast wonderfully today. Fuel mileage suffered as expected but not too bad. Ended up going with a 40 footer instead of the 50 footer.
