I am going to do the add a leaf thing, and I already have the leaves.

What do I need to be concerned with?

What do I do about the pieces of steel that get bent about the front and back of each leaf? How do I rebend or do I remake them? What gauge steel?

If I add one leaf each spring, what size U bolt do I need, or can I reuse the stock ones?

TIA,

Tobash

If you're talking about doing the Rancho Add-a Leaf install, that I believe can be found on Jeff Zepp's site, you remove a couple of short leaves before you install the add-on. I don't believe you need to mess with the spring clamps and the stock length u-bolts and pins should be sufficient. Of course, it's a good idea to replace your old u-bolts. Not to mention that the old u-bolts and pins may have to be destructively removed. :D

This add-a-leaf?

Good Luck.

Who is Jeff Zepp? QUOTE]

:D Current president of TLCA.

Here's his site: Jeff Zepp's Home Page

I don't see spring add-on on the site, so I'll look for it.

Edit: Sorry, I wasn't able to find it quickly. Morgan Fletcher's birfield.com server went down recently and the lcml archives went down with it. I'll see if I have an old copy somewhere and post it later.

Tobash, I fxxxing HATE your avitar. That said, I would not reuse the U-bolts as they are intended to be "stretched" by the specified torque. IIRC, that should be 80 ft#, so if you do choose to reuse them, at least take them to 90#.
My .02;)

I did the rancho add-a-leaf what I did was remove the 2 bottom leaves and replace it with the rancho and I love it its nice ride and flexie I even ran the same U bolts I did this on my fj55 and it will work on 40's as well
I did nothing to my stock leaves and I have almost 2 inches more clearance

i prefer my air shocks. adjustable, cheaper, easier to install, and because air can move from on to the other, they dont affect articulation as much, imo.

While you've gotten everything apart, wire wheel your springs, grind down any edges where the leaves might have worn into each other, paint them, and then put some Slip Plate on them before you put them back together. Should make it ride pretty nicely, even with the add-a-leaves.

Degnol:

You should really not be afraid to voice your opinions. I promise I won't be offended (much). So go right ahead and let yourself go. If you keep it in you will just get ulcers and lose your hair.

Seriously though...

The avatar is from Monty Python's Flying Circus.

The avatar is a reminder to not take anything seriously, even if that means getting naked on TV and sitting by a freaking church organ in order to get a cheap laugh.

Since I have bought my BJ-44, I have been teased for driving an "old car", but I get twice the mileage of my buddies gasoline cars, and in the summer I run free veggy oil.

In other words, I am laughin' like a naked guy on TV.

Hence, the explaination of the avatar.

Best,

T

P.S. - Your avatar shows some guy (Rick Astley?) with a mouth wide open sayin' "never gonna". Any guy with a pic of his mouth wide open (especially Rick Astley) is probably gonna, and as such he would flunk the "don't ask don't tell" test. Anyone say "glass houses"? Just my $0.02, and all just in fun.
