Quick Question: Check ATF w/ Engine Running?

My manual is on order, so I can't look it up -

Can anyone verify if the ATF on a '99 should be checked with the engine running or not? It doesn't seem to say on the dipstick.

Yes, Engine running in park or neutral on a flat surface.
 
and you probably should run through the gears repeatedly first.

and warm engine.
 
Also a old trick to tell if your fluid is good. Take a white paper towel and drip some drops of your transmission fluid on it. let it dry. It should dry to a light pink color. If when it drys you end up seeing a dark or black dot surrounded by pink then you need to change the fluid ASAP (I would do a complete fluid exchange and don't ever use a cleaner in your transmission) If you see pink with a grey border then just do a normal transmission service or a fluid exchange. Got this information from a transmission industry expert at SEMA show.
