Hi all -

I'm reposting the following from an email I got from Kevin in MD. I can't help him, but thought the community here might be able to.

Joe,

I just bought a 1991 TLC, and sadly learned that fixing it is going to cost a bundle. I've seen a dealer and also several garages, but none that I like. The dealer wants me to trade (hah!) and the mechanic wants to buy my rig for $1,000 (hah again!).

So I'm coming to you for a recommendation on who to see. For starters, I need some exhaust work and new power steering box/pump. I'm unemployed and don't own a bank. Please let me know what you recommend.

Thanks!

I was just curious what a "bundle" is? Unless your real handy and have a good network for parts, "unemployment" and "major cruiser repair" aren't a good combination.

You may find a good samaritan to help with labor but P/S parts could still be expensive. Maybe if your friend provided a budget he could get some good pointers.

First, I highly doubt you need both a pump and a box. But if you do, take a trip to your local junkyard for the parts and install them yourself. Unless you can do the work yourself; a 91 Land Cruiser is far from an ideal vehicle for the unemployed. Sell it to your mechanic for $1000 and buy a Tercel, Corolla, or Civic. Seriously, you will thank me later when you are getting 30 mpg instead of 12.
