Hi, my first time to the forum.
Where dose the title IH8mud come from? (Just curious).

Can anyone tell me what kind of mileage the diesel version of the
1991 Toyota Land Cruiser 70 ZX
(with the 4200cc engine) is capable of?

Also, are there differential sets available with taller gears for the 70?

Thanks in advance, Allen

Welcome
The 1hz engine mileage is dependent on service life but it should have no problems reaching 500.000 K. The diffs from a 60 series are interchangeable with the heavy duty 70's so yes there are options available. Marks also have transfer case gear options if you after better road speed at lower RPM. :)

Thanks for the reply OZ

Good to hear these have a good life span, and gearing is available.

Any idea what kind of fuel consumption these get?
Once I have this info I can decide on a purchase of a 70 series.

Thanks again

Thanks for the help folks.

I am in the Northern Rookies, Idaho USA, around 950 meters.

They do a little better than expected, with enough tweaking they could be sorta reasonable.
What size tanks do Troopies have?

Thanks again

I fitted a Fairey transfer overdrive to my HJ75-12HT and well worth the effort I'm back to 2000 rpm at 120 KPH in 5th overdrive. 4th direct overdrive is the same ratio as 5th in the h55 box so it suits pulling a load at hwy speed on hills etc. Including both high and low range and reverse it has 20 forward and 4 reverse gears so plenty to pluck from when towing. The early type landrover type that mounts in the PTO position are very weak and should be avoided but the last off them for the 1980 HJ60 are the strongest because it includes a new split outer transfer case.

When mine was rather stock and low I was getting 10.5-11/per 100km. Always got over 700kms to my 90l tank. A few times I got over 800kms on a single tank.

After turbo, lift, tires, amour, recovery gear I get more like 13l/100km.

I should probably add my 1HZ was incredibly healthy and well maintained and was coupled with a manual transmission. Seems the autos really rob power and economy.

It's amazing what you can learn on forums like this.
I hadn't considered an OD, silly when you factor I have one in my 89 1 ton full size 4X4 Chevy van.
I put a diesel in that and enjoy it, but Land Cruisers are a passion of mine and I always planned on getting another one after selling my FJ40.
I purchased a Prado for my kid and I really have the bug to get back to a land Cruiser now.
Thanks for all the insight from all of you.

Also the tojo direct injection engines are more suited to elevation and cold starts but you will have to do a engine swap if you go down that path. The 1HDT and the 1HDFT would be my pick for the later 90's cruisers or as in my case the 12HT in the early 84 to 89 heavy duty cruisers.
I love spending other people money :santa:
