Hi guys,
My 3rd post in as many days - sorry! Have the week off and I've devoted it to the 2 cruisers.
My PZJ70 started returning about 7.5 kms/liter recently and she always did about 10 (normal for a shortie).
I've isoloated the problem (I think...) to the drum brakes. After driving her the rear hubs were almost too hot to touch.
When I first jacked up the rear I couldn't move the wheels by hand (handbrake off and in neutral of course).
I then removed the drums and checked everything out ... the brake pistons are fine, shoes good (only 6 months old) and I gave it a good clean - including the self adjusting cog device. Also bled the system and put new fluid in.
The handbrake didn't engage initially so I had to scroll the wheel with a screwdriver so it held but not too tight so the wheels were free.
Turning the wheels always feels a bit stiff - I think thats down to the limited slip diff??
Anyway long story - eventually the handbrake tightens (due to the self adjusting arm/cog) and we're back to square 1.
So my problem is - either it's too loose for the handbrake to work or it's so tight that the car is running with the brakes on.
I've played with the adjusting nuts where the cables end as well as at the handbrake lever itself. I've bought new bearings for the wheels but don't think this is the problem as once the brakes are off the wheels move freely and there's no play.
I've run out of ideas! Any help would be much appreciated
Grant
