I'm Going To Install A 1hz In My 64 Fj-40 And I Have Read That You Can't Go With A 40 Ps Box, But Have To Switch To A 60 Or 70. I Would Rather Have A 60 Due To Parts Here In The States. Has Anyone Done This Switch, And How Did You Do It. Was It A Huge Pain?

60, 70, really the same box, differnet arm. get a 60 box and It's really a piece of cake.

Hi

I put a 60 series steering box in my '77 40 when I swapped in the 3B. It was no problem at all. The only thing that I would suggest is getting new hydraulic hoses built.

Good luck

Pretty sure the 70 box is reverse rotation to the 60 which means it would have to go out front like tha saginaw boxes.
The 60 box is easy in a 40 series, just do that. Might as well tap it for the rock ram while you are at it.

yeah.. I meant the mounting style is same. It's not quite out there as far as a saginaw. but yes. you are corret.

So All You Do Is Mount It A Little More Forward Of The Orig. What About The Linkage And All. Do I Need New Steering Rods? Thanks For Any Pics!! AND BY THE WAY, WHAT IS A ROCK RAM?

My version :)

Planning to use a 70 series steering rod to a 55 series steering column. Aussies who do this kind of 60-to-40 swap say the parts are the correct length and pretty much bolt on.

Dave.. it doesn't look like you needed to grind the shock mount.. is that right?

I put a 1/2" spacer plate between the mount and the frame, so no grinding is needed.

So Let Me Get This Right. I Can Bolt On The 60 Ps Box In Front Of The Shock Tower, Using A 1/2" Spacer On The Shock Tower So It Doesn't Rub The Steering Column.? Then I Can Use A 70 Steering Rod Along With A 55 Series Steering Column. What Year? I Have A Later Model 40 Steering Column With A Non Ps Box. I Going To Have To Pull That Out And Go With A 55 To Get The Proper Length, Right? Is That A Big Deal?

How late is later? '79 and later 40 series columns (at least BJ42s) have a universal joint built into the bottom. The shaft from a later IFS mini will plug right in. Just butt weld the 60 shaft to the mini shaft and you are golden.

Also see https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?p=68302#post68302 for Ford shock towers. Cheap and easy.

I chose to go with the ford shock towers so I could run a longer shock.. Helps with SOA and as bruce said they are cheap and easy.

Yes, with a spacer the shock tower will clear the steering without grinding. Since mine is going to be 99.8% factory parts, I chose to keep the cruiser shock tower. The Ford tower might be cheaper and more functional, OTOH. Kinda like choosing between an SM420 or an H41f tranny, I guess.

If I were to do this again, I'd get the proper steering column (55 or later 40), fit the 70 steering rod and then let these parts locate the steering box. The steering rod has a slip joint so the box location can vary a bit. There will be a minor mod on the firewall for the steering column either way.

I'm Trying To Keep As Factory As Possible Also. The Guy Doing The Work Put In What I Think Is A Later Model 40 Steering Column And Pedal Assembly When He Did The Front Disc Conversion. I Hope It Will Work Out Easy. Thanks For All The Help Guys!

Nice work beanz2 and lowenbrau,

Could you guys post a picture of your steering shaft from the firewall to the steering box.

My cousin Rob used a 70 series steering column for his 60 series steering box (into his 40 series truck). He figured you may also be able to use the shaft inside an '83-'89 hilux tilt-steering column... ...Every little bit of information helps.

(got excited earlier in the day as I was mocking up a spare Toy IFS steering box that my brother had lying around, only to notice it's reverse rotation (a la 70 series?!!))

Cheers,
Steve

Scroll up for pictures. Its as easy as it looks, just drill and tap the box anywhere that works for you. One side is presurized when you turn left and the other when you turn right.
A 2"x8" ram works pretty good on a Cruiser.
