Im sure this has been discussed here before, I searched with no luck. When I put it into 4-low it won't engage 4wd unless the 4H button is pushed. It's more like 2-low, which I kinda like but would like to know whats up with it. Isn't there only 2 solenoids on a 62, one to engage 4wd and one to disengage? If so why would the button work but not the shifter? Or could this be a mod from some PO for 2-low? I can't wait for my parts to arrive from cdan so I can finally put the beast back together and get my beater off the streets.

Mine does the same and I consider myself lucky, I have options! It can lead to embarassing situations when you forget to push the button and think you are in four low but hey, no fools, no fun!! I looked into the fix one time but forget what it was, I think there is a switch in the T-case that trips the solenoids to engage four wheel when low range is engaged that is the culprit.

Hey man, I like your choice in cruizers. :grinpimp: Like I said I kinda like this "feature", but I just want to make sure its not gonna ruin anything. I have heard of people modding their rigs to have selectable 2-low, but not like this.

I don't see any problem with the switch functioning this way, but I wear glasses! Just be prepared to forget to engage the switch once in a while and make people laugh at you. No biggie. It has been like this in my truck for six years now - since I bought it.
As for choice in trucks, I should remove the '89 from the sig as it really did go to KC and is no longer mine. The nephew is in love with it though. Next on the sig line will be a 100 for the wife, I think.

Yes, as Steve said, there is a seperate switch on the tcase when the shifter is moved to low that sends a signal to the elec/vacuum solonoid to engage the 4wd at the same time. My 61 works both ways to varify this. My 62 has that switch disconnected intentionally to allow 2wd low.
