Moving to Austin from Vegas about 1200 miles. The car I would be pulling behind my LX470 would be a Front wheel drive Acura ILX (compact) about 3000 lbs. anyone ever pull another car with a car dolly where the front wheels are on the dolly and the car is in neutral. Any concerns or advise if I decide to use a dolly? My LX has a OME suspension withe the 1 1/2 inch lift.

I'd say any steep descents would be of concern, but on your route, I don't think that will be a problem.

Good luck in Austin. Heard it's pretty nice there.

Many, many moons ago I "planned" on towing a Corvette that way from Phoenix, AZ to Jacksonville, FL. I say "planned" because almost exactly half way (30 miles east of San Antonio, TX) the right rear wheel bearing on the Corvette's trailing arm let go.

Ended up putting the car on a trailer for the last 1,000 miles. Based on that experience I'd use a trailer, or pay to have it shipped.

Any reason you specifically want to use a dolly over a full car trailer?

While I'm sure the dolly can and will work for this situation, I personally have always used a car trailer. Gives the benefit of surge brakes, and in general more safety/stability. It's less wear and tear on the towed vehicle.

I would definitely go with the car trailer if possible.

You might want to check the manual to see what the un-braked towing capacity is. The 6500 lb rating assumes that the trailer has brakes. I wouldn't be surprised if the un-braked towing capacity was something like 2500 lbs.

Thanks guys, reason I asked is the wife hates to drive, but looks like she gets to follow me in the ILX, leave in the morning. Two 7 hour days and one 6 hour day. Found out that you can't use a dolly with anything in the car. We have stuff in the car.

I third (whatever) pulling a trailer. I've used our 100 to trailer tow our 40 a number of times and all went well. Trailer had electric brakes and speeds were kept reasonable for the types of roads. If you end up with the car dolly, don't be afraid to put clothing or other light items in the car. Sent from my iPad using IH8MUD

I'd still take another look at a car trailer. I've towed 2 different cars, both weighing more than your ILX over long distances and serious passes easily and comfortably. The drag at speed is minimal and I can stay up with traffic without issue.

Renting one is not too bad cost wise. Given the distances you're suggesting, it may actually be the cheaper route than to fuel two vehicles, even with the Hundy hauling more load. It might be less stressful with both of you sharing driving duties in one car and being next to each other also.

Either way, have a safe trip.
