Yesterday I happened to be behind the LC when the wife started it after a night of sitting and I was surprised to see a slight puff of blue smoke come out. I watched it all day long at every other start and nothing. Has anybody else noticed this? Mine is a 99, 100K miles, Mobil1 (4500 miles since last change). It doesnt seem to be burning any oil?

Thanks,
BC

How long had it been since the last time it was started? I might suggest a used oil analysis as well. It may help uncover if there are any dark secrets your engine has.

Thanks, it wasnt sitting for too long, maybe 24 hours. This morning I watched it close and nothing. Went and had my oil changed and no oil useage in the past 4000 miles. Put Mobil 1 back in. Must have been a fluke.

Thanks,
BC

I've noticed the same thing a couple of times over the last couple of years (117k). Like you said, most times there no puff, but every now and then, I'll see it.

Would oil leaking by an valve stem seal be the most likely cause?

my father has one of the original Lexus LS400's which has more or less the same engine--I remember backing it out of the garage and not letting her warm up--to wash it for example---upon starting a puff of blue smoke.....

Puff of blue smoke = your Land Cruiser is Catholic and has a new Pope!

I'd second the recommendation for a used oil analysis. It's hard to buy that much peace of mind with a high milage engine for just $20.

For peace of mind, run a compression test. All cylinders should be within 14 psi of each other and 142 to 192 psi or higher. Remove all the spark plugs and do the test with the engine warm. I don't see what an oil analysis will tell you about blow-by.

Does it blow blue smoke under acceleration or decellaration? I think you guys are going over the top for a "puff of blue smoke". My 2 cents AU worth

Yeah- we could have him in a new engine- preferably turbo diesel- if this keeps up.

The reason they won't sell the TD in the US is you guys would kill them with kindness!

I'm sure that if its only doing it when the engine is cold, its just cold start enrichment. Most all vehicles have it. Even my Mercruiser 502 in my 62. If the water temp drops below a certain degree the ecu will give the engine a longer injection pulse. If its warm, it won't, hence no blue puff. If it was white smoke and did it everytime the truck was started, I would say valve seals.

i believe that waggoner5 has it on the mark, my camry does it on the first start of the day and only then, and it does after every mobil1 oil change (usually done in the afternoon).

Mine has only done it on a few occasions, and then on the first start. Never any smoke any other time. I'll gladly accept Gary's explanation!
