I received the little tie rod end that fits on my pto shift linkage. I installed it and some new bushings and pins here and there. The whole thing is now in place.

When I shift the lever in the cabin, I get full gear engagement about 50% of the time.
I put the transfer case and gearbox in neutral then pull the on/off pto lever to the rear. I can feel and hear gears clashing. Using the clutch pedal helps and maybe I am supposed to always use the clutch pedal with the pto shifter.

Anyway, is this normal or and indication of wear? I have yet to take the pto assembly off... I dont know what condition the gears are in.

I'm pretty sure you are supposed to push in the clutch to engage and disengage the PTO.

Yeah. Even with the clutch its 50/50 chance that it will fully engage.

Try engaging the PTO with the clutch pushed in, and keeping the transmission in a 1st gear. With the transmission in a gear, the internal shafts and gears will not spin, or spin at much slower speeds. This should help.

You can also stop the engine and engage the PTO, just start with transmission in neutral and clutch in.

I ran a PTO on an '68 Doge PowerWagon this way.

Worth a try.

Vehicle stopped, transmission in neutral and transfer case hi/lo still engaged the PTO gear in the transfer case will be stopped. Once the PTO is engaged move the hi/lo lever into neutral and use the transmission to in forward or reverse to operate the winch. You only list a 88 BJ74 which not sure is a auto or stick be is probably a single direction PTO.

If you have a rod for shifting the PTO it should have a adjustment at one end that should allow the lever to engage further if that is part of the problem.

I never had any problem engaging the PTO with the transmission in neutral and the clutch engaged (not pushed). Sometimes I could feel the gears trying to mesh, and a slight wiggle of the lever would push them in.

Yes, it is a single direction pto shift lever: On or Off. It is a manual hence my use of the clutch pedal. I adjusted the linkage, as mentioned in original post.
It definitely seems to work better with the clutch pedal pushed in.

I can shift my PTO on and off with the clutch in, with the clutch out, transfer case in neutral or in gear without any problems given The transmission is in neutral. It does make a difference if the drivetrain is warmed up or cold and if the gears don't quite line up I put the transmission in first and little pressure on the pto lever and start to release the clutch and they'll get everything lined up enough for the PTO to engage.
