I am trying to remove the shift lever for my pto winch. It is the On/Off kind (not forward, off, reverse).
I think there is supposed to be a flathead screw holding the knob in place. I can't see any fastener yet the knob does not come off when I pull in it.

How do I remove the knob and lever/shaft?

I searched through my manuals and found nothing on the lever but found this in my parts manual hope this helps. It looks like it screws on from the bottom two pics.
If you need any more photo's let me know.

Oz, thanks!
It does look like threads on the end of the rod.

Why don't I have that pic in my manual?
What manual is that?

I want to get this thing out so I can track down the buzzing sound it makes.

Well I need to get me one.

The knob does not want to unscrew. I'm not sure how the side button and top button are involved, if they are at all.

Yup that little black button you push down needs to be removed. It's screwed on.
Also the little screw that holds the knob on. I think there maybe two.
The slider part is the safety catch so the top button can't be accidently pushed in and release the pto lever.
Becareful not to loose the spring that pushes out the safety catch.

kbushnz,
So I should unscrew the top button, remove 1 or 2 screws holding the knob in place, then unscrew the knob.
Is that right? The side "lock out" button is left alone?

The knob does not unscrew. Its held in place by the screws.. Pulls straight up.
So Remove button. Remove screws. Hold in lock out and pull up on whole knob....
Watch for springs.

I'm going to walk out to the barn right now and try again.

I haven't seen any reports of mushroom clouds from the northern hemisphere, So I guess you got it off? lol

kbushnz,
I foolishly let myself be seen near the dormitories. I was swamped by "motivated" students: I am giving a test tomorrow.

YES, I removed the screw facing forward and with a flashlight I could see the other was not present. I then followed your directions and the bugger came right off.

I see now that the offensive sound might be the mechanism the top button actuates or the shift lever's pivot point.

Thanks for making this easy.

I'll post some pics eventually so generations to come can decipher the puzzle.
