just got a new (used) PTO winch that I want to put under my RJ77 Landcruiser II near the rear axle. I live in Borneo and LC2’s are the only 70 series we can get here. The PTO gear only has one output flange pointing to the front. Has anybody taken it apart and successfully reversed the flange to point to the rear?

Yes. I have personally switched the output to drive an Air Compressor, and @lowenbrau also did a rear PTO Output to drive a Hydraulic pump for a Hydraulic Winch. It's a very simple job, no new parts required. Just take it apart and reversies.

Tried today and got stuck. When I drive the front bearing (now rear facing) all the way onto the reversed shaft until it sits flush with the small ID washer, then the output gear scrapes onto the rear inside of the housing. Looks like it needs another washer and only be driven partially onto the shaft. Did you have the same issue?

And reverse assembled shaft (before driving front bearing on).
