Okay my wife and I finally finished rebuilding our PTO winch for our 1982 FJ45.
The old PTO winch is now ready for the rest of the items such as the drive shafts and split case gearbox that we do not have.
As I have been reading, the gearbox seems to be allusive in the market. I have found a few but they were either very expensive or just crapped out or both.
Question:
what other models 1981 and newer Land Cruisers other than FJ40s with the PTOs installed have compatible split case gear boxes such as maybe a BJ74, FJ62 or ?
Is there a place on this site were someone has this information already?
A list of vehicles with compatible gearboxes and drive shafts would be very helpful.
Thank folks.

Would have to do more homework to find all dates but know any 60 series with factory installed T case should work. 70 series thru 1/1990 should work. Not sure I've seen a PTO offered for sale that was later then then that. One of my split case PTOs bolts to my spare A440F/T case including the handle. Wasn't off any US imported FJ62 so guessing it came HJ61 with a automatic. Anything from 8/80 until 1/1990 will work but could be the single direction compared to the two direct used on the 4X series.

Drivelines think only the 79-82 4X series would be a direct bolt in. 83+ 4X series with a four speed would need holes drilled and hanger for the second pillow block bearing installed. If it had a five speed the length would be wrong. Serious doubt you will find anything other then these that wouldn't require mods.

Have you checked your T case for the PTO gear yet? My spare A440F/T case has the PTO gear even though one of the CATs prevents a PTO from being installed. My 82 FJ40 H42/T case does not have the gear.

Edit 36124-60020 is the cover used on the T case when a PTO is not installed. I've found this part used up to 8/2001 on the LJ70 model. Not 100% sure but probably means a PTO off that model would work on the later 40 series.

G'day mates, here a split and a early Pto box for comparison both forward reverse and twin output,
Now one question do I need a pto box with the selector arm on the front for a 2h/5speed conversion in a 1972fj45 or will the pto i I have clear the tube crossmember?

Interesting my guess this split case PTO is off a 81 or 82. I have one from a 6/84 HJ47RV (troop carrier) from Australia. The shifter is on the front and only has the front output. The troopy was a four speed so shifter even if on the back had plenty of clearance. It does appear the two shafts used for the shifter could be switched to either side. Would just require new O rings. If I had to guess Toyota switched the shifter to the front in 83 when they started installing a five speed in the SWB 40s. Those would have clearance issues. Once they did they just did it on all of them not just the ones going on a SWB with a five speed. May be when they dropped the rear output as well. I have two split case PTOs with the second even newer. It only has the front output flange.

For your shafts a pre 79 would work better on your 72. Your left radiator bracket riveted to the front frame member should have two ears to mount the pillow block bearing. 79 and later a bracket bolted to the frame side rail and the shaft going to the winch went thru offset holes in the front frame member. Earlier holes were inline.

Excellent information.
I do have the single PTO gear installed already for a gearbox as we took a look not long ago. I see that their is a difference in the gearbox casings mount holes (offset) as seen it the photo of the two from catskinner.
The split G/B on the left has two gears also, I suppose this is for forward and rear. The ones I have come across were with a single gear only in the case (single direction), would this be correct for a split case also?.
So you think it may be possible that a LJ70 models gearbox maybe a possible source to? Are the 1981- to ? FJ60s ones to consider also as a source?

Good Source = with PTOs

F60s with factory T-case properly 1981 and on would be a good
70 series thru 1/1990 also.
HJ61 with a automatic. Anything from 8/80 until 1/1990

Okay I feel a bit better now knowing that I can look elsewhere for a G/B for our 1982 FJ45 instead another 40 series.
If any of you folks have a usable G/B or drive shafts for sale please do not hesitate to PM me.

Cheers

For what ever reason the only split case PTO that are two direct seem to be on the 4X series. The one I believe came off a HJ61 is the single direction. The two gear you see on the two direct one piece and fixed. It rides on the gear in the transfer all the time. The gear on the output shaft is the one that moves. It has a extra small gear that is lined up with the smaller side of the double gear. When the gear on the output shaft slides over to the extra small gear it reverses the rotation. On the single direction the gear that fits inside the T case slides and the one on the output shaft is fixed. Because it only moves when the PTO is engaged Toyota uses a bushing on the sliding gear instead of a ball bearing. That gear is also beveled to make it easier to slide into the two gears.

I have a feeling any PTO post 8/80 you find will work. Seems to be a lot of variations as to single or two direction, front/rear/both output and which side the shifter is on. But is also looks like it possible to switch things around pretty easy. Thinking seriously of using a early PTO gears and shift fork to convert my single direction split case PTO to two direction. Only thing I think I need beside new seals and O rings is one spacer that appears to be available. Since the earlier case is wider the spacer used in it will be too long.

With the cover removed I found this.

I had found this gearbox on mud but lost the members email but looked to be a good contender.

That would be the PTO gear in your transfer case. Like I said mine US import 82 FJ40 doesn't have one. Since I plan on using this case in my 65 pickup with the hand brake off my 84 case I need to tear it apart anyway. I'm sure one of the vendors will have one. Orange45 (Georg) comes to mind. That's the way it goes, I've collected a few sixteen spline PTO gears but end up needing a nineteen spline.:meh:

The PTO pictured should work. It is a single direct PTO. Seem kind of weird seeing a black and white picture.:hmm:

Next you'll have to tackle the shifter. Correct for your year I believe is the cable version. Lever is mounted to a bracket bolted to the frame. Cable then went to the lever on the PTO. It has a plate on the tunnel cover with a wing that allows it to slide over and lock the lever. Early transmissions had a threaded hole for pin the shifter pivoted on. These have a hinged plate that flipped over to lock the lever. Switching transmission top covers with a earlier one and going that route is a option. Post 82 uses a push button shifter that mounted with two of the top cover bolts and the bolt hole for the cable camp on the side. It has trigger toward the top and button on top that both needed to be pushed to move it. I like this type the best. I do not have the cable type but the other two if your looking for pictures.

I believe the black and white was an accident while downloading.
I have some guidance in parts from TOYODIY.COM web site. The linkage picture is a bit lacking in close up parts so I think if I could find a few real photos on Mud it would be a better help.
As noted on the page tops its for a 8008-8210 model FJ45. I need to take a look at the 82 - 84 models to compare any differences if any.
Appreciate your help very much.

Someone on Mud was selling the rubber boot for that style shifter. Last I remember he still had some. May also be available new. I'm still looking for a diagram of the boot for the 83 and later model. It has inner/outer boots and trim ring held to the floor with three bolts.

I believe Pete in Japan may have that style or probably a good bet to have picture of one. I'd never seen a picture if the later style before finding one. Not sure of the percentage of later 4X series that had a PTO winch but very few show up with detailed pictures. Australia seems to be the best bet for finding a late model PTOs from a 4X series. Believe Canada got some but few show up because of the rust. Just too bad Toyota USA decided we didn't need them here in the US in the late seventies, instead opted to give Warn the market as dealer offered electric winch option.
