The Toyota - 2008 Tundra Double Cab (a 200 Series Land Cruiser disguised as a big fat truck)

Unladen weight - 6200lbs

Tires to be installed - 37" Yokohama GeoLander MT 3 ply

Lockers to be installed - ARB Air Lockers

Duties - daily driver, offroader, extreme plowing.

I need a winch or two with big pull and absolute reliabilty. Enter the Warn Series 12 Deep Fording Winch, which is basically a version of the military HUMVEE winch. Well enough just can't remain, so a 6hp XP motor will be installed, possibly some synthetic line... and we'll see what else...

Didn't the US military replace all the electric Humvee winches with hydraulic units in the view of absolute reliablity?

yes and there is a surplus dealer selling the electric ones for 250.00 each and i cant find the ad to post up here .i think it was in military vehicles mag and i cant find the damn thing .i have a 10,000 lb electric on my gmc 1 ton front and rear .usually when your stuck plowing the only way out is backwards ,i also carry a 100 feet of extra cable because winch points are hard to comeby in some parking lots.a short pointed truck axle is also handy to pound through the black top at 4 in the morning when your alone and just want to go home .good luck

This is the newer Industrial Series, a far cry from the reportedly troublesome Humvee winches of the 90's. Most of those were rated for 6k and 9k, quite a different animal.

My extreme plowing consists of my folks "camp" up in one of the hill towns, and my father in laws cabin <--- that one is a long plow up a dirt road, probably a good mile (I don't recall my brain dosen't remember much since the wee ones came along) with deep muddy ditches off to the sides, which never seem to freeze even when below zero... being stuck at either place isn't something I desire.

The newer industrial winch is well sealed, uses a contactor, has thermal overload etc etc.

i think this i a commercial for warn winches.people plow drives like that all over the country every winter and its just their job i see nothing extreme about it.go to norway and see what they plow if you want extreme.

This isn't a driveway......Perhaps what I have described sounds less than impressive. No matter, I'm not on here to show off, just share some fun projects. You are welcome to ride along and see what this entails, but we both know that's not happening. So I'll leave it at.

That hydraulic system is nice! Something like that was a consideration, but I don't have many long pulls to perform, so a HD electric should work well.

The winch arrives tomorrow... pics soon.

The gear ratio and component size place this at or above a consumer 16.5ti. The 16.5 has a 3.5" drum, the series 12 a 4" drum. So with the 4.6 motor, not quite as much pull, add the 6hp motor, and we can speculate that it will be back up in a similar area. This also changes the line speed calculations a bit.

Gear box is large and heavy, sealed, might have to add a breather. Anyone ever convert one of these to gear lube?

Large 4" diameter drum bearings. Real doube lip seals, possibly viton.

Remote, large rocker switch is easy to use with bulky gloves. Plugs are keyed and waterproof.

Very cool Brian, please keep the pics and updates coming!
