Program key, but... No blinking red light?

I bought a factory key and went to program it with the routine where the key is in the ignition, open door, etc.

But all the instructions describe the number of blinks by the red light... And I do not have a blinking red light!

Am I an idiot? Where is it? Advice on why my light doesn't blink, or how to get around needing it?

Look on the dash near the clock. Not on the key.

Yeah, I realize it's on the dash. Mine doesn't blink.

Weird. It does go out if it recognizes a transponder. Be sure that the key you're trying to program isn't on a key chain with an already programmed key. Really, the light is just an affirmation - you could go through the steps and see if it works. Let's say that the bulb is just burned out. The programming steps should still work.
