I have a 1998 LC with a malfunctioning car alarm. I assume one of the door sensors is bad and it sets off the car alarm-I suspect it is in the tailgate. It is a very intermittent problem but I am not popular with the neighbors and need a solution. Any advice and how difficult is to de-activate the alarm or determine the source of the problem?

Does it seem to happen more under certain conditions? Mine used to go off when it got hot out. Fixing the door actuators fixed mine.

I replaced the actuator motors that lock and unlock the doors and tailgate. I don't know anything about the tailgate sensor. The tailgate lock assembly is vey easy to access, though. Look in the door actuator threads for details.

I would associate your problem with a door lock actuator failing. Hit the door lock button several times to cycle the door locks to lock and unlock. After about three or four cycles if you have one that doesn’t want to lock or unlock fully, that is your culprit. Replace that actuator.

What happens is the actuator moves the lock enough to disengage the lock, but not enough to disengage the unlock detection switch.

In the meantime, when you unlock your truck, hit the unlock button on the remote 2x or if you use the key in the lock, turn the key 2x to unlock all doors. That should do it until you can replace the offending actuator.

Thanks for the information. My problem sounds like the one on the volvo forum and I will begin by checking the tailgate latch microswitch. I get the door ajar warning light on occasion which goes on and off as I drive. When I park and lock the doors the alarm system will see the door ajar message activate and trigger the alarm. The door seems shut but apparently the microswitch is failing. Thanks again to all.
