I figured I'd post up here before the main board. Went to move the 40 this morning, turned the key, fired up, gave it some skinny, let off the key and it died. Nothing really out of the ordinary, gave it some choke, tried again, the same. Thought it might be flooded after a couple of more tries, floored it, stayed on for a little. But died again.

Played around with it a little, I can only get it to stay running if I keep the key in the starting position. Once I let off the key, it promptly dies.

So, I'm thinking the ignition switch itself, but if anyone else has any other ideas, throw them out at me.

check for power at the coil with the key on first, work backwards from there.

Ignition switch was bad, had a spare column and switched the electrical connections. Stays on now...

Well spoke too soon, switched the key cylinder, same deal.
Tried the ignition switch cable, same thing.
Went back to the original cylinder, and the other cable, no dice.
I think the key was actually sticking in the other column, keeping it in the start position.

At least I got the running boards off the 80...

Did you get this figured out yet Brian. I'm happy to help, if I can, but I have been slammed trying to get Dozer ready for GSMTR. My garage is starting to feel more like a prison. :bang:

Got a new switch in the mail, still same problem. I'm moving down the line and going to change out the coil with a spare, and check the resistor.

It's no big deal Ramon, I'm going to focus on it on Saturday and try a few things. But I may hit you up for some help putting the lift on the 80 when the shocks come in!

I leave for Denmark Sat. night (cue Al) for a week, so nothing is in a hurry....

Switched the coil, still not staying on. Replaced it with a spare coil/resistor combo (yes I've got 3 coils) and voila! Back to having a running cruiser...

Greg the ballast resistor is the "brick" thing you were talking about! :grinpimp:
