Howdy all,

Here's my problem:

I went camping in oklahoma and decided to get Eleanor (86 fj60) dirty. I put her into 4H and started rolling around. I looked down and notice that I was no longer in 4H. I continually put her into 4H and she kept on popping out. FInally I used a leash to keep her in 4H. What is wrong and what can I do to fix it?

Thanks for your help

Patrick

my guess would be that the linkage needs adjustment.....got a Toyota service manual handy?

dogboy - I have a FSM for my 60, and it doesn't offer any help (that I can find) regarding how to adjust the linkage to get best performance. I ended up doing it by trial and error...

patrick/cruiserhunter - to get to the linkage you need to remove the transfer/tranny skid plate. Look up under the truck under neath where the transfer shift lever is, and you'll see the shift linkage. You adjust the linkage by removing a nut from on top of the ball end of the shift linkage (the ball end has a rubber boot on it). The nut is 12mm. The nut has a washer under it. Once the nut and washer are removed, pull the ball-end down, so that the threaded stud comes down and out. (Note when you put this stud back in that it has a flat side that must be lined up correctly to fit back into the bracket.) The linkage has a lock nut - and you need to loosen it to do the adjustment. To eliminate the "came out of 4H" problem I adjusted the linkage longer - that is, I turned the adj counter-clockwise. In total it took 4 full turns to keep it in 4H. (I did one turn, then test and repeat.)

Hope this helps.

thanks alot lovetoski,
i'll give the adjusting a try tomorrow. Glad to hear it's not something freaky and expensive. I'll let ya'll know.

Thanks again
patrick

yo cruiserhunter, when you moving up here next month?

need another 60 in the area! :D

check the motor and trany mounts, if busted it can do whats happening to you

what happens in low?

could also be linkage or ?

My truck does this in 4-lo and it's because the shift boot keeps the shifter from going all the way into gear and when the truck flexes a little the boot kicks it out of gear.

Would a worn/leaking linkage cause a rattling noise in normal 2WD? Something in my tranny/t-case area is leaking (I looked at the boot the other day and it was pretty wet in that area).

you got a lot of "rattles" in that there truck of yours Jason ;)

sounds like you might be in for some new seals in the tranny & t-case.....hard to say without knowing more

dogboy... yeah, I do have a rattle, but just one. I am trying to figure out where it is coming from. I have not ruled out the driveline (at least the front).

The sound is very faint and very slow at slower speeds (like pulling forward in a drive thru line). It gets louder and faster as speed is increased, but I can't hear it at highway speeds (due to the wind noise).

How much would getting new seals run me?
