Primer Gun Recommendations

Can anyone recommend a primer gun for shooting heavier primers and 2k surfacers?

Not thrilled with results I'm getting from a Devilbis Startingline and 1.8 tip. I realize its a cheap gun, and the results show that so I'm looking for something that will lay down these thick coatings much smoother than the Startingline gun.

I have had no issues with that gun. I was using it for shooting PPG K36 primer surfacer this weekend and it came out great. I found that mixing it 5-1-1 with reducer will help it lay down nice and flat. The settings I used were: 1.8 tip, 20psi at the inlet, fan control all the way out, paint knob 2 1/2 turns out. Also, I use disposable plastic cups so I don't have to deal with the touchy aluminum cup and lid.

Thanks zags. I'm using PPG ShopLine JP285 surfacer and there's no information on the spec sheet about reducing. I'll have to ask the paint shop to see what they recommend. Maybe acetone??

I know what you mean about the aluminum cup and lid on the StartineLine guns. I recently bought a replacement aluminum cup with a plastic snap on lid for this gun. Hoping it will be better. I plan to try that the next time I use the gun. The plastic lid on the replacement cup looks just like the lid on my Binks M1G. The cup and lid might be for a different gun than the SL but it fits the gun body just fine.

You need to reduce it. I bet that is most of your problem...

Was told its best not to reduce but that was ok to reduce the JP285 up to 10% using a urethane reducer like JR505, JR506 or the DT reducer line (DT870, DT885, etc).

Was told to mix the JP and hardener, then reduce this mixed amount up to 10%. Cautioned not to reduce any more or too much shrinkage and potentially cracking can occur down the road.
