got a quote to repair my oil leak down under either an oil pan or rear main, they were saying sight unseen, like over a 1000 dollars and like 10 hours of labor.

does that sound right, how hard are these to do. i can change brakes replace contacts etc. Pretty basic stuff, is this too difficult for a newb to try?

Oh yeah 97 with 220k

How much is it leaking? Oil leaks can be good at preventing rust.

Depends on where it is leaking from..

Im not sure what the cost is but you might want to buy the pan, and do it yourself, I helped my friend with his Celica, and we blew it out in 2 hours

Its just a matter of getting the car high enough for comfortable work, and taking off 15-20 screws that hold the oil pan there..

It should be easy but make sure you have the gaskets and sealant and stuff before you start it up.

Good luck

Oil Leak

If it is the rear main, you are looking at pulling the transmission. Time consuming but doable if you have the right equipment. Price-wise for a shop to do it, anything over $750 is too much unless you are in a very high rent district.

If it is the pan arch on the upper oil pan it is a real pain as you have to hoist the engine up a few inches to get the pan to clear the cross member. More of a time consumer than difficult. One would think that it would be cheaper than replacing the rear main seal, but it might be close.

This topic has been discussed recently a few pages back; A quart a week is a lot, however; what oil are you using, have you considered something higher viscosity, have you tried something to swell seals (BARs Rear Main Seal stop-leak, etc) as a last ditch effort???????

What part of northern California are you in? If you're anywhere near Sonoma, give Mudrak a call.

He's open for business right now. First name Gary. Call him. Let him have a look at your rig. He'll know what to do.

Just to be clear, you say 'about a quart a week' but are we talking a 3,000 mile week or a 300 mile week? Makes a big difference.
