I'm pleased to announce I've just become the proud owner of an '84 BJ60 with 3B motor. It passed safety in another province in December happily, unfortunately I live in the land of contradictions, Quebec. It's okay for me to drive around in an '86 Honda Civic Flinstone-mobile with shattered windshield without ever getting it safetied, but the second you bring a vehicle from out of province. . .

So I have a few questions for all the experts out there:

  • Was there ever a safety neutral-start switch on the 5-speed transmission in '84?
  • The horn's not loud enough?! Maybe dirty contacts? Replacement options?
  • Steering box leeks, but I've read a bunch of threads on that.
  • Needs a spare tire rack of some kind.
  • Rad support rusted out. Should I find a used replacement or try to build something (I'm not handy with a welder but willing to learn)?
  • Body mounts all around. At this point, should I consider really going to town? I mean once I have all the body mounts off. . .
  • Exhaust hangers. Do I just weld something on--any old hanger from the part store?
  • Oh and brake and fuel lines need to be clipped to the frame. Should I just find any old clips from the part store?
  • Other than that (not included in the safety oddly enough), lots of gunk on the knuckles--I guess that needs doing--and there's a pretty good grinding noise in time with the RPMs coming from the left rear differential/axle. Bearing? Luckily you stop being able to hear it after about 45mph.
Thanks for any help. I'm so happy to have joined such a big, happy family.

Thanks for the reply. I figured most of those things were chassis things. Are they different between diesel and gas?

  • Was there ever a safety neutral-start switch on the 5-speed transmission in '84? Dont' think so. It doesn't show up in the wiring diagrams
  • The horn's not loud enough?! Maybe dirty contacts? Replacement options? There are replacement horns, do a search. However, first check to make sure both are making noise. It could be a bad contact.
  • Steering box leeks, but I've read a bunch of threads on that.
  • Needs a spare tire rack of some kind. The stock one is underneath the fuel tank--is your's missing. Check in the parts for sale or parting section. Or there are threads for making putting in standing on edge inside the back. Don't know if they will pass your inspection, though. Here's one thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/66414-spare-mount-inside-cargo-area.html
