Kelly and I have decided to lead a Presidents Day w/e overnight winter camping trip!

This will be an opportunity to enjoy the desert out in Utah during the winter and all the glory it has to offer!

Departure will be Saturday morning Feb 19 and return on Monday the 21st. The route is TBD but we are thinking Lockhart Basin from south to north ending in Moab. It will have challenges for everyone. You should be able to camp and cook in cold weather, have good tyres and a reliable rig as it is very far from cell service or help.

The trail can be read about in Charles Wells book of Moab 4X4 trails-can't remember the exact name...

We want to put together a crew to help with food as well as other necessities and Kelly will be the point on that.

As always if you can help out let me or Kelly know.

Please post up if you can go and what you can offer as far as help. We will need to inspect vehicles for worthiness (tech inspection), meal planning(Kelly), gunner(s), or any other details.

This should be a BLAST and a great way to get out to the Utah desert during the off season!

Great!

We are having a meeting at Safari Ltd on Feb 1st at 7PM to go over details etc...

The trip is open to all and well behaved non fighting dogs/cats? are welcome!

See y'all at the meeting!

I'd love to come along too! Just tell me when & where, and what to bring.
Rhodes

When and where is at the top of the post. Details coming very soon.

Bring camping gear for winter. Make sure your rig is in good shape as this is a remote trip.

After today's outing, I'm looking into this seriously. Would love to get away from the grind with my :princess: for a couple of days.

Book Cliff Cruisers Overnight Trip
Presidents’ Weekend Saturday 19 Feb – Monday 21 Feb

Preliminary schedule
We are planning on running Lockhart Basin- south to north (Indian Creek to Kane Creek)

Brief overview:
Vast & remote area where vehicle failure is a serious matter. The first 15 miles are relatively easy. Then conditions range from easy to moderate with a few difficult spots. You must pass through a difficult canyon at the end of the trail (downhill). Only the most capable of stock vehicles can get through. You’ll need high ground clearance and excellent driving skill to avoid body damage. The Lockhart Basin Road is on BLM. land but the spur trails encroach into the Park and also the Indian Creek Wilderness Study Area. We will tread lightly and bring out everything we take in.

Estimated Mileage
Moab to beginning of trail: 70 miles
Lockhart Trail is approximately 40 miles (with no spur roads – so estimate 40-60 miles)
Hurrah Pass back to Moab: 20 miles
Needles Outpost is NOT open until 1 March (read - not an option for re-supply)

Meals
BYO If you are doing the full weekend with us: plan on 2 breakfasts, 3 lunches & 2 dinners with plenty of snacks & water. Saturday evening cocktail hour will be provided for the group – compliments of Safari Ltd.

Saturday 19 February
Meet at the Loco Gas Station, Fruita (south of I-70 on the right of the round about) 9.45 am (ready to roll!)
We will depart at 10.00 sharp! We will be traveling I-70 to River Road (128).
Lunch at the sheep corrals on the Kokopelli Trail
We will top off fuel in Moab & head to Indian Creek (Hwy 211) (south end of Lockhart by the Needles District)
Set up camp around the crossing of Indian Creek / We have the option of camping at Hamburger Rock Campground (primitive camp, vault toilet, no water, fee area $8 per site (not vehicle) or heading up the road and camping (no amenities)
Cocktail Hour (provided)
Dinner (on your own)
Followed by a beautiful evening under the desert sky

Sunday 20 February
Depart for the trail by 10.00 am – we have a full day of trail today
The plan is to make it past Chicken Corners, over Hurrah Pass into Kane Creek to camp for the evening. (Plan B, if needed, would be to camp before we reach Chicken Corners).
For those who would like/or need to depart early – follow Kane Creek Blvd out to Main Street intersection (right at McDonalds in downtown Moab) (approximately 15 miles)

Monday 21 February
Depart around 10.30 or so.
Refuel in Moab
Head back to GJ via Klondike Bluffs Trail
& ideally make it home for dinner after a great weekend!

Well, I hate to say it, but we're going to have to bail on this trip. :frown:

I really want to go, but we will be closing on a piece of property and need some time to get all the research & paperwork done.

Have fun out there and take lots of pics!

That's what RE agents are for!

Sorry to hear that you won't make it. We have a great group and we'll get the pics up when we get back.

We need to put in our due diligence and make sure there are no glaring reasons to back out of the deal before we close and this weekend is a great chance to get those important items taken care of.

Who knows, we may end up camping out there this weekend instead. :hhmm:
