Hallo

I drive a KZJ 90R 3 door manufactured in 2000.
I am worried about exessive backlash in the drive train when releasing the clutch after shfting gears.
Is this normal for permanent four wheel drive as it sounds and feels terrible. It also happens if i drive on the highway and release the accelerator and then accellerate again.

Any sugestions will be apreciated

There is some backlash in the drive train but I wouldn't call it excessive. Not knowing the age or the usage of the vehicle my thoughts would be to compare it to another of a similar age. If there is a difference then start checking your driveline. Universal joints right through to the diffs. Increase in backlash could be attributed to wear on the faces of the gears but it would have to be a bloody lot of wear to create what you are describing.

I'm not being funny but, is it the way you are driving the vehicle ?

Drive train backlash

Hi ajbcons,

I have a 98 4 door 3.4V6. I have a 50mm suspension lift and about 2 years ago after an extended trip (7500km) through the Australian Outback, I too got driveline backlash.

A couple of months ago I pulled the tailshaft out and sent to a shop to have the slip joint replaced, but they said it was OK but my universal joints needed replacing.

Put the shaft back in the car and still same problem. Last week installed a 16mm tailshaft spacer to the rear tailshaft and now almost all backlash has gone.

When a vehicle is raised on its suspension, the tailshaft has to lengthen slightly, this means less spline area to take the loads, so spline area wears quicker.

Hi everyone
Thanks a lot for the advice so far. I was wondering if there are any ajustments that can be made to the speed that the clutch engages
My reason for asking is if I release the clutch VERY slowly the problem with the backlash/jerk becomes much better but it is not possible driving like this all the time
It actually feels as if the clutch just suddenly engage by itself when the clutch is released normally causing the driveline to jerk
The car has done 130000 kilo's and had a complete original clutch fitted about 5000 kilo's back by the agents trying to solve this problem
Both diffs ,transfer case and gearbox was opened but the guys at this workshop said everyting was in perfect condition.

Regards
Ajbcons
