Ok, I have the gear box in and have the shaft connected but before I tighten ever thing up I want to make sure I am not missing anything.

First off there is a machined flat spot on the steering shaft side shaft coming out of the top of the steering box. Does this need to be lined up in any particular orientation, in realtion to the rag joint or the vehicle?

Also, I guess in general how do I make sure that the box is lined up with the wheels? I guess I can always reinstall the steering wheel?

This is on my 79 40.

I like to connect up the box without the pitman and bleed all the air from the system first. While going lock to lock find the center of the gear box, and once found install the pitman arm then reinstall the steering wheel in the proper orientation. Now cycle lock to lock and make sure you have full steering. I am not sure what the flat spot is there for but you will see it does not affect installation of the rag joint.

Thanks John

I have already hooked up the pitman arm using the marks per the FSM. I can see how it would make centering easier not having to move the wheels and steering. But other then being a smarter way it doesn't really make a difference right?

So I will tighten everything up, temporarily install the steering wheel and then reposition it to center.

I assume you just count the rotations lock out to lock out and then split the difference?

You got it.

Sweet! Thanks Jon. I might just get this thing back on the road this spring>
