Power Steering Pump is dead. Need Your Help.

Id look for someone parting out a truck and get a pump from them.

I am running 33's so that will add a little stress to the pump.

D'Animal you seem to be knoledgable on the subject of rebuilding PS pumps. Mine isn't leaking, making noise, nor is the bearing loose. The reason I'm looking at it is because the steering gets really tough when I'm wheeling. I'm thinking a rebuild isn't really going to help this issue since the pump shows no other issues. Your thoughts?

The box was rebuilt by west texas off road a few years ago.

I say it's 2 things. Heat ( install a cooler) or cavitation (pop the reservoir cap, is the fluid really foamy?)

both of mine did the same thing no leak but no power I replaced the pump and got my power back.... my Truggy with hyro eats pumps but I have life time warranty and can swap em out on about 45 min now :meh: even with a large tranny cooler for P/S cooler :hillbilly:

Thanks Joel. Based on your experience I'm going to rebuild it before the crawl next weeked and see how it does. If it still seems like a problem I'll re-adress the hydro idea. Hydro just seems too complicated considering the expedition type approach I've taken on the rest of my build.

Ha, reading comp is not my forte, today. I read rebuilt 'pump' where you'd typed 'box'. I didn't wanna damn the pump outright based upon that mistake. Now, I'll agree that is sounds as if the pump is giving up the ghost.

When my pump died, I put on a Napa rebuild. Well, like others have experienced, that didn't last long. So when that died, I went Saginaw. I love it. For me, it's just a much better solution. It provides more boost which makes turning the 33s easy (and I'm set for larger tires). A replacement pump is readily available everywhere for reasonable prices if I should ever need one. Also, it allowed me to run off the middle pulley. This not only allowed me to lose my smog pump, but now I have two belts on the water pump so if one goes I still can travel down the road.

This was basically a bolt on operation. Like all things, going bolt on meant that it cost more (buying bracket instead of fabricating one). But I'm very happy so far with it.

Same as Cruizerman, I have a Saginaw ($50.00) at the corner auto parts store. came out of a 6 cylinder GM truck, older model. I came with lifetime warranty. So far, is holding and turning my 33's.:steer:

And also how difficult is it to swap in a GM PS pump?

Zack

Not hard, on a scale of 1  to 10 :banana:it was a :banana::banana::banana:for me. I used the same mount of the FJ60 pump and had a bracket prepared to hold the GM pump in place, goes from one of the pump front holes down to a hole where the smog pump used to be. Yes, my truck is desmoged and that could be an issue for you. For about $140.00 you can get a pump mount which is a heavy duty mount. Don't forget the high pressure hose adapter ($10-$15). All this is still a bargain if you compare the price of a new OEM pump, I do not believe too much in LC rebuilt power steering pumps, besides they do not carry the lifetime warranty that the GM Saginaw has, Im pretty sure someone out there has the part number, including the pulley for a GM pump that fits.. My truck is a daily driver and 1 year later, the pump still holding toghether.

So the saginaw pump is a direct bolt on?

Like I said, mine is mounted on the old Toyota power steering mount. You have to fabricate a support that goes from one of the front bolts on the Saginaw pump. Mine is made from an old pump/alternator adjustment bar. If I can, and the upcoming hurricane allows me I'll take a picture of my system. So I guess it could be considered an almost direct bolt on. You can also use the mount sold by MAF, that one comes with a built in adjuster. Remember if you use the Saginaw pump whit the GM pulley, the Toyota belt is too thick.:D

If your skinny, Buy new... if your heavy set... rebuild. If your a fat bastard like me... Go without power steering. Burn some calories.

Here pics of my setup. Two bolts at the front, one bolt in the back, 18 months since I have this truck and so far has not failed..

This is all GM, no belts belts jumping or breaking.
