I have a mysterious leaking issue on my PS system . I am a owner of a 1985 FJ60. I have inspected the lines going to the unit, and I am seeing no signs of leakage anywhere near them,or at the PS pump. I am suspecting it is a leak at the body near the steering shaft attachment. However I am not quite sure. I have this guard or cover around the gearbox, and it limits my viewing possibilities. Is it safe for me to remove this guard to evaluate my situation. And if it is a leak at this location I am describing. Is it cheaper for me to rebuild with a seal kit, if there even exists a seal kit, buy a rebuilt box,or go new?
Thanks,
Jason

Yes. You can remove the guard. IIRC, it's a clam shell; remove a couple of bolts and you can open it up. It's probably there to protect the steering u joint, so make sure there isn't anything that will interfer with the steering if you're going to drive it with the guard removed.

A seal kit is available for about $125 from SOR. You can also get just the input shaft seal (<$10). A remanufactured gear box from an internet vendor will run you about $400 plus core charge or more.

The rebuild requires some special tools to remove the input shaft seal adjuster plug and lock ring. Get the factory service manual (chasis and body manual) or downloan one from www.birfield.com. This will give you an idea what you are getting into.

If you do a quick search for rebuilt steering gear on this site you should come up with a number of threads including opinions of individuals re-sealing their own boxes vs. sending them to a specialty place. The name eludes me, but there is one place that people seem to be very happy with.

Have the box rebuilt by West Texas Off Road. A quick look at the procedures in the FSM on this job will probably convince you to farm out the job rather than tackle it.

If you think you might ever go to 35's or bigger you might as well have them tap the box so that you can run Ram assist if you ever decide you want to do so. It's only $50 extra.
