I was going around a corner today in my 1989 BJ74 when without any kind of warning I lost my power steering. My initial thought was broken belt but that was not the case. Fluid level is up, pulley is spinning normal, no unusual noise, no leaks. Is this typical of a failed pump? Is their any way to test it? Can I get a rebuild kit or just a new pump??

My other thought is I had a shop change my pitman arm last week and I guess it was a bitch to get off. Said he put some heat to it and hit it with a hammer before it budged with the puller. Any chance my problem could be in the steering gear box??

Weird, normally they make a bit of noise before they die. I would remove the pump and have it bench tested for pressure.
You can rebuild them
The steering box is fairly reliable
