Has anyone installed one of these and if so how effective is it ? I guess it would replace the "u" shaped (non-finned) OEM tubing at the bottom of my grill.

On the 80 series there are a lot of people who replace the factory "paper clip" with a cooler like that one. I did it myself on my 80 series.....I bought one that was more rectangular in shape than your example from summit racing...The factory power steering cooler on the 80 series in down low in front and rusts out easily...Pricing a replacement is what drives the interest in the alternatives...if you look in the 80's forum you'll probably see lots of threads (maybe you'll even come across mine????) Good luck.

I think the tubing at the bottom is high pressure line. The kit looks as if might connect to the low pressure side.
You could use any oil/transmission cooler for this.
There is lots on ebay and you may find one ina shape or size that suits your engine bay

Hi All:

That is actually not a bad price from Man-A-Fre!

Seriously, you should be able to find an auto trans cooler kit like that in any chain auto parts store in North America.

When I installed Saginaw power steering in my FJ40 I also installed an auto trans cooler like this in-line with the return (low-pressure) line of the Saginaw PS pump.

Regards,

Alan

Did yours have symptoms of overheating or did you just add it as a precaution?
I seen some of those oil coolers on ebay and they even had their own little fan:cool:

Hi All:

RoscoeFJ73, the fluid cooler was added as a precaution due to the truck's use as a trail rig.

It is easy to install, increases the amount of PS fluid in the system, and certainly can't hurt the situation! :D

Alan

when I am on fast tight twisty trails with a lot of hard steering or rock crawling again with a lot of steering the steering effort goes up and the response is sluggish and pulses a bit - returns to normal when cooled down. Turning 35's . The power steering reservoir looks damp at the top - looks like the fluid is heating up and expanding. This does not happen very often.
