Hi all - looks like my alt gave out on the way around chicago. Sis is getting married here. Any recommendations on service / parts? Looks like I gotta tow it as we are in a restaurant parking lot. 88 fj62. No charge showing on meter - died while driving. Any one familiar with the lombard toyota dealership?

I don't have any experience with that dealership. They might charge you a lot and make you wait til they can the part.

You should be ok to drive it to wherever you need to go on the battery. Its a simple change, if you wanted to just swap it out. If you can make to i-55 & Weber you can use my garage/tools and air conditioning.... I don't think I have a good 62 alternator (other than the one in my 62). You may also be able to open up the alternator and clean up the brushes, that may get you home.

give me a gingle if you need anything 708 466 0394 john

oh....."died while driving"....my bad

the 29.99 battery from the closest battery shop should get you mobile enough to get where you want to go.

I'm going to be at the shop tomorrow as well if you can get to naperville.

You can give me a jingle too. I think a gingle is a ginger thing.

I use a hard "g".....cause ....well im a "hard g"

John and Gumby - Thanks!! We got her towed back to the Marriott at the Oak Brook Resort. My whole family is here for the wedding, so I think we can fix it if we get the right parts.

I didn't have any luck at the Lombard dealership for the Alt and Napa also doesn't carry.

Not sure if there is a replacement on a newer vechicle yet - will read boards more tonight.

Need to check the electrics, etc. still too as it could just be the battery.

Gotta go to the wedding tho!!!

Thanks again. 913 908 8690

I can have CarQuest's house brand sitting at the shop at 8 tomorrow morning if I order it tonight. By 11 if I order it in the morning.

A car quest nearest to Oakbrook should be able to order the same alternator from the chicago area depot that I'm looking at. There's only one to be had.

609 Ogden Avenue, Downers Grove - (630) 852-9800

200 bones, though. My cost. $308 list. $64 core

The new and the denso reman are not in the online system, but might be available through their foreign car part subsidiary.

IIRC, John had many bad words to say about the placement of a 62 alternator. Might be tough in a hotel parking lot.

True...I did. But I was trying to inspire confidence. IIRC its under the fxxxing smog pump!....ahhh there I go with the language... I just get frustrated when I think about how a vehicle that was meant to last a long time and be fixed out in the middle of a desert could be so fxxxing difficult to work on and........ahhhh sorry there I go again.

Have fun.

We need all the inspiration and confidence we can get!

I did the de-smog this winter, but left the smog pump on. I have the belt (for sans-smog pump) at home, though :( Would love to just ditch the pump now vs putting it back on after the alternator.

We are going to swap batteries first. Make sure its not a battery.

Gumby is going to double check for Denso brand and hopefully it all comes together Thanks so much!!!

A new battery will at least get you on the move. You could get a walmart batt with a warranty and just drive from walmart to walmart all the way back home.

Ha! Love it. We are going out now to do some testing. Uncle is going to swap batteries and see if it gets pulled down, and how quickly. Also going to check for magnetic draw on the back of the alt as well as possibly go pick up a cheaper volt/amp meter and start testing.

When my 3fe alt. Died.....I struck it several times with a big wrench & it began working again...
Lasted until I sold it....was still going when it left...

That John & Todd. What a great coupla guys!

Some day, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a service for me.

To check if the alt is charging? You don't need any tools, just enough juice to start the motor. Turn the key to "on", see where the voltage gauge reads, start the motor....If the gauge goes up the alt is charging. If it stays the same or goes down....no charge.

Hitting it with a hammer isn't a bad idea either. After spending $20 and 20 minutes to change the brushes in an alternator for a 3.0...I'm going to try to rebuild my alternators in the future....hell I'm sure that's all I'm getting from Autozone anyway.

OMG I can't believe I forgot the "hitting the alt hard with a hammer" technique - I may have read your posts on that before.

But . . . . we ended up getting a Ultima brand rebuilt from O'reilly's. It was $132 - prolly the cheapest version you can get, but it comes with a "limited" lifetime warranty, which I am guessing I will use.

Swapped it out. Charging much better now and running indefinitely!

I want to thanks to all you guys esp Gumby for getting us in the Que for an alt and esp for all your support and offers!!!

Again - thanks to all and look us up on KC if you ever go through and need anything from help to recommendations for food/beer :)
