Just one of the charms of life in the big chitty! One of the many things that I don't miss since leaving. I haven't locked my truck once since I moved up here, (except for when I visit you folks down there)!
I usually have several hundred in tools and cash in the rig at any time.
I left a surburban neighborhood there for a much shabbier one here. The ethics here just are far higher.
Here, about a year ago, I dropped a bank envelope full of cash in a parking lot. A guy picked it up. He saw my first name & phone # on the back of my truck. The bank ID was on the envelope. He went to the bank, described my truck, gave my first name and phone. He was able to deposit the cash in my account! Try that in the big chitty!
I have two bicycles parked in front of my garage in plain sight. They aren't locked. Both are lubed, tires inflated, ready to go. They wouldn't have lasted one night in my supposedly civilized suburban neighborhood in Mesa. They have been parked here for 9 months. Nobody has messed with them.
Tonight, I came back from a job. I had several thousand dollars of power tools in a truck. Most of them go to another job in the morning. I didn't feel like putting them all inside, and loading them up for the next job in the morning. So I just put them all in the trailer, an open trailer. There they sit. Nothing will molest them except for the morning dew!
Theft here is so rare that every one is on the front page. The smallest stolen item is news, as is the name of the main suspect. One guy down the street has a huge Snap-On toolbox full of tools on his carport that hasn't been locked in years. Next to it is a Miller mig welder. Nobody messes with it.
In Mesa, I had to make a place to pee in the garage so that I didn't have to leave the garage unguarded that long with the door open. Here, I don't bother to lock the door. It might inconvenience the neighbor who calls me to borrow a tool.
It is a different world, and I don't miss yours one bit for even a moment!
I love this town!
