Some real poo brown Recaro seats for the multi hued poo brown interior on the FZJ showed up on ebay recently. Ebay price $152 + $90 to ship em'. The really nice part is adapting them to stock seat's manual frames will be rather easy, I'll get some pictures of that up soon. I can also see how they'll adapt to power seat frames, if folks are interested. If you think the stock seats are fine, you have not been offroad in a seat that holds you, they reduce fatigue substantially.

Not quite right in color, but close enough for me.... they match the dash and carpet quite closely.

Cool. Not to mention who cares about color if you put a cover on them ;)

Bingo. Or, if you're reall obsessive- get an automotive shop to re-cover them professionally.

I love recaro's. Had some in a Honda I owned. They ARE great for holding your ass in place.

Brian,

Fawk I just posted the RECARO in the chit chat forum: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=45653 detail please, what type of seat frame did you use right under the Recaro seat?
Also $242.00 that fawkin cheap. Do you know some fine Recaro seat can go up to $1K or more? If you can take and post the frame pics.Do they still have those available or in Black maybe? I need 4 of them.

Thanks

Brian, are your original seats a velor? I'm really starting to think about swapping seats and door panels with someone who has cloth. I just don't like leather.

What's wrong with leather?

Keep the leather. It's easier to clean, maintain, etc. If you don't like the feel of the seats, get covers for them.

Besides...swapping out with someone with velour? You'd likely end up with 10+ year old seats/cusions/fabric.

There's only one cruiser (who happens to be close to you) that I know of with cloth/velour in a newer 80 (97, IIRC). I don't know if he'd be interested in a swap, but PM me if you want his info (he's here on mud sometimes and on the NorCal 80s list).

Actually I really like the tweed in the 91-92's. Velor isn't my first pick. I was kinda curious as to what is in the 93's. Not sure if that's the year they switched to velor.

This is my 3rd vehicle with leather and I've learned to hate it. It's true that it isn;t too bad to clean, but if you don't take care of it every 6 months it won't wear to well in 5 years. It radiates cold when it's cold, it's hot in the summer (which I can handle, can't handle the cold radiation though) Also I don't trust the power seat mechanisms to last 15+ years.

I could be interested. I'll PM ya.

Sorry about the hijack Brian :D

There's nothing I hate more than leather when it's 20 degrees F out side.

That seat looks like the same model I'm using, except mine are black (paid $300/ea, new, back in '02). One guy sitting next to me on a flight from Tokyo to LA earlier this year owned a 4x4 shop in Japan that sold Recaros...said the only difference between the multi-thousand dollar models and bottom end ones (in the same class of seat, eg, touring or racing) are the coverings (leather/cloth) and bling features (manual or power adjustments).

You can get an inflatable air bladded for the lumbar for around $35, but the shop where I bought my seats said I probably didn't need them, and to try them out w/o the manually-inflatable bladder. They were right! Little fatigue, even after 9 hrs of driving. I got the recaro frames, which allow one to adjust the front/rear height (3 height holes). I have the fronts all the way down, rear all the way up, for a commanding view of the road including the top corner of the ARB winchbar on the passenger side, which I couldn't see before.

Good seats are among the most underrated upgrades one can make. The difference is startling. If it were power, it would be like having 100 more horses and ft-lbs of torque.

Nice

Back in the early 1990's, I too had Recaro's (gray/black w/ very fine pinstripe colors)in a sweet fully optioned '90 VW Jetta GLi (16v). I could fly around off-ramp curves at 60+ mph and not move an inch - me or the tires (z class 50's - stock). I don't drive this way in my LC but I still like the idea. Yet ANOTHER item for the "list".

I found the place that can custom made ’91-’96 LC RECARO seat bracket. But im having problem here or maybe one of you guys willing to help me and find out whether the LX450 and LC had same exact holes for driver and passenger seat. And also it would be much easier for me to replace and install the new bracket in, if both the 450 and LC are the same.

Thank you

There's a place in Long Beach, CA, that custom builds recaro brackets for any car ($75/seat, IIRC, but seat to floor bracket only). You need the rails that attach the seat to the bracket. I got mine as a set for $125/seat (bracket+1pr rails and bolts) from the recaro dealer where I bought the seats. The price would have been about the same had I had custom brackets made. I bet there's a stock bracket made for the 80 and 100 series.

Brian,

Would there be an egress/ingress issue if the vehicle is lifted? Can you simply slide in/out like you can with the oem seats? I need to get me one of these for my trips across the country!

Not trying to be obbsessive... it's all in the details though, a well built rig that is.

Recaro seats do tend to be on the expensive side... as for adapting the stock frames, well, the stock manual frames mount to the stock seat in the same way the Recaro seats take their brackets. 4 pieces of flat stock should make things come together easily. I'll try to get some pics up over the weekend.

The stock seats are a velour type material. I will probably hang on to them.

I like Jim's analogy! A very underated upgrade.

There is a set of the VW Recaro (actually several) sitting in my barn. They are on ebay all the time, a good deal!

The seats that have the larger thigh bolsters can inhibit easy in/egress. Some models have smaller thich bolsters, the major support comes from the upper bolsters anyway.
