hey all, 1990 HZJ77 24v 1hz and i think i may be having alternator issues. when checking the alternator, i found this plug. does anyone know what it's for and what it should be plugged into? my batt, t belt, and filter dash lights are on which leads me to believe that my alternator is on it's way out, but could the issue just be this plug? I'm not sure what it is or what it plugs into. any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Not 100% sure what it is... but 97.33% sure my 3/93 HZJ77 has that extra unused plug off the harness too.

You still have the engine bay power outlet? Mine is gone.

Looks like this. Not my rig... found image on the internet >

i do, but it doesn't appear to have anything unplugged from it. in fact, the harness or plug won't even reach

Pretty sure it's an unused plug.

I had a similar situation when my alternator adjustment bolt sheared off when driving hilly roads. Lights on the dash came on, dimly, across the board, and later realized it wasn't the alternator, just that the belts became loose from the bolt shearing off. Your issue may actually be the alternator, but it's almost certainly not because the plug that already wasn't plugged into anything is still not plugged into anything. Unless there's another train of thought that I'm missing...

That's not it then.

EWD in the resource section >> https://forum.ih8mud.com/resources/70-series-electrical-wiring-diagram-08-1992.215/

A5 & A6 both listed as alternator. Different markets maybe?

At some point the alt went from a round plug to oval but that's a separate issue.
awesome, thank you

i think you guys are right about the plug not required for anything, but i do believe i'm having an alternator issue. those lights, (batt, tbelt, and filter) came on intermittently at first and now they won't go off. belts are good. one battery is good the other not so good so i'm guessing the alternator issue is draining the one battery? your thoughts? both batteries were purchased at the same time last year. i will charge the battery this weekend and see if any difference.

Check your alternator brushes. They are a wear item and are cheap and easy to change. Refer to a service manual if the procedure is unclear.

It was tucked downward, but certainly unused on my frankenrig.

A search will turn lots of alternator troubleshooting threads on the forum here and the 24V/diesel section. Some aftermarket choices available or fully rebuildable by a competent shop.

I've read through a few actually. got a part number for an aftermarket alt and bracket, both already on order. i figure I'll put the aftermarket in and rebuild the stock and keep it. i just wasn't sure what the plug was for or if it may have been the cause. i appreciate all the help and information from everyone. thanks! 🍻🍻

The original alternator will be of far higher quality than any no-name aftermarket item. Unless the alternator has really been cooked, it's very easy to replace brushes or the voltage regulator and get years more life out of the unit. Any vaguely competent mechanic with a puller or press can replace bearings. I've also replaced rotors and pulleys in the past.

Yes, exactly, and no need to change the connector plugs.

The only problem is if someone has already fitted a non-genuine alternator in the past.
