I am from the old school and used a Binks model 69 for many years. It has 2 adjustments, spray width and fluid. I have an HVLP gun which I just used for the first time last Friday and it has 3 adjustments, air, fluid and spray width. I played around with the air adjustment, but I was using clear coat so it was hard to tell what it was actually doing. I ended up putting the air adjustment somewhere in the middle and shot my hood which turned out OK. Can someone please tell me what the air adjustment is supposed to do and is there a specific procedure for setting it? Thanks in advance for your help.

my air adjustment is left wide open. Cause I use a regulator, dialed to the right pressure.

The fluid is going to be by feel. Adjust it so you either mist on or toss on. Up to how you think it coming out.

The spray pattern on mine lets me either go circular in pattern or flat. and everything in between.

Circular is great around door jams and tight spots.

I read that tip pressure is critical for clear coat google it or go to manuf site---not in the know on this but they put a gage on it that solved the prob---

i think your on the right track!

10 psi at the nozzle

I read that 10 psi at the nozzle is the right number for air
