Hey all...

When I got my '88 FJ62 a couple of month ago, the plastic bushings that keep the shift lever from wobbling where gone, so the shifter was pretty sloppy. I replaced those bushings, which removed the lateral slop, but there is still a bit of play along the front-back axis. Feels like this is coming from the linkage to the tranny, so I just wanted to know if this is usual or if there is some other way to tighten up the front-back play.

Thanks for your help...

I already did that fix, found the file for it on the 3FE list.

I'm just asking if it is normal for there to be some play in there after...

thanks,

My 89 FJ62 did it the whole time i owned it and i was never able
to fix it. It never seemed to hurt anything though, but it was
always there and bugged me, so in answer to your question yes
it was common for me and i did here of a few other owners who
had the same prob. no one seemed to be able to fix it either

Yeah, it's not really a problem... just annoying. One place it could come from is if your shifter gets reamed out a bit in the slot where it connects to the flattened shaft that is connected to the transmission linkage.

I'm going to take another look and see how the linkage from the shifter to the tranny looks... If it can even be seen from below.

I wouldn't eliminate all the play, a tiny bit is good.

If the shifter is too tight it might not let the transmission positively engage.

the fact your bushings were gone would make me worry a bit about your transission geting to hot. My shifter used to get real hot and it melted the bushings away. I added a transmission cooler and did a passive flush and replaced the bushings. and things ran a bit cooler.
I still have a bit of sloop in the shifter lever which is pretty normal.

Those bushings disappear over time because of the grease they used on them when new. You would have to be 350 F + to melt them. Still, a tranny cooler is never a bad idea with the A440F.

I have done the bushing fix and have very little slop even with high miles on my FJ62. I wouldn't worry about a little bit as long as it's not wanting to slip into another gear or something.
