Pilot Rock/ Sliverwood Lake today 2/20/05 PICS
So a few of us were inspired by the pics from " First Toy" adventures last weekend so we headed out this morning to find some fun up at Pilot rock and Silver wood Lake. Those attending were Rogersfj401969 (Ian), PKP80 (Sam) and myself AMMO (Matt). We met at the 138 around 10am and headed up to the 74. We were going to head in this way however the road was closed; several times coming up the 138 we crossed water crossings, ranging from small streams to out right rivers 1 to 2 feet deep just rushing across the roads. We were offroading on road! And the trails hadn’t even begun. We continue up the 138 to the silver wood camp. This was a route I had done before, but it was nothing like I remembered it being last summer. The normal fire road up the back side was rutted and washed out. Needless to say, it WAS A BLAST! River crossings, rock gardens, DEEP RUTS, and we didn't even get to the really hard stuff that was posted up from last week. This trail just kept getting better and more challenging. After lunch by a water fall we headed down the back side and over to the trail head that First toy and crew did last weekend. I should mention that up to this point we did not have rain, we even saw the sun at times. Up the “Gatekeeper”, Ian tried the right line but it was a bit too steep for short wheel base so he chose the left run. Sam went right and blasted it up and over. I followed up to the right also. We did not get to finish this run, we made it to the DEEP I mean REALLY DEEP “V”’d out ruts that the van in First toy’s pics blew the beads. At this stage it was 4pm, raining rather hard, and getting very muddy. Not knowing what was ahead we decided to back down, past the wrecked pick up in the ravine, and turn back and call it a day. That was an adventure in and of it's self... Once on the 74 we crossed the mother of all rivers, about 60 feet across, 2 to 3 feet deep. It was a great day, and I think the bad weather added to the fun of the run. I’ll let the other driver tell you how they learned to 3wheel rather then 4wheel several times… Because of this very reason not many pictures were taken, they would have been great but the focus was to get all 4 tires back on the ground through some key spotting and a little help through weight at times, see last pic…
