Pilot Rock/ Sliverwood Lake today 2/20/05 PICS

So a few of us were inspired by the pics from " First Toy" adventures last weekend so we headed out this morning to find some fun up at Pilot rock and Silver wood Lake. Those attending were Rogersfj401969 (Ian), PKP80 (Sam) and myself AMMO (Matt). We met at the 138 around 10am and headed up to the 74. We were going to head in this way however the road was closed; several times coming up the 138 we crossed water crossings, ranging from small streams to out right rivers 1 to 2 feet deep just rushing across the roads. We were offroading on road! And the trails hadn’t even begun. We continue up the 138 to the silver wood camp. This was a route I had done before, but it was nothing like I remembered it being last summer. The normal fire road up the back side was rutted and washed out. Needless to say, it WAS A BLAST! River crossings, rock gardens, DEEP RUTS, and we didn't even get to the really hard stuff that was posted up from last week. This trail just kept getting better and more challenging. After lunch by a water fall we headed down the back side and over to the trail head that First toy and crew did last weekend. I should mention that up to this point we did not have rain, we even saw the sun at times. Up the “Gatekeeper”, Ian tried the right line but it was a bit too steep for short wheel base so he chose the left run. Sam went right and blasted it up and over. I followed up to the right also. We did not get to finish this run, we made it to the DEEP I mean REALLY DEEP “V”’d out ruts that the van in First toy’s pics blew the beads. At this stage it was 4pm, raining rather hard, and getting very muddy. Not knowing what was ahead we decided to back down, past the wrecked pick up in the ravine, and turn back and call it a day. That was an adventure in and of it's self... Once on the 74 we crossed the mother of all rivers, about 60 feet across, 2 to 3 feet deep. It was a great day, and I think the bad weather added to the fun of the run. I’ll let the other driver tell you how they learned to 3wheel rather then 4wheel several times… Because of this very reason not many pictures were taken, they would have been great but the focus was to get all 4 tires back on the ground through some key spotting and a little help through weight at times, see last pic…

Wow, sounds like a good run! That V-gorge climb was pretty hairy, huh? Several climbs were good challenges before that too, glad you went before the rains really take the trail out!

Looks like I missed out again. What do you think about doing the same trip next Saturday 2/26? I won't flake out this time....

It's late, I'm tired, and I have no idea as to where I should start regarding today's run aside that it was the most experience and fun filled one yet. I'll let the pics do the talking for now.

Few more....NOTE night shot: Some say crazy, RogersFJ40 (Ian) no doors or top in the craziest rainstorm on the 15 S. muscling out the cold for 1.5 hr. back to the OC.

What a fun trip. I only hope that I didn’t let ammo down. His truck never got stuck, or even slowed down. I my only wish was that the 40 was about 4 in wider because when we got to the ‘V’ out part of the trail there was no way I could straddle it. No, matter how hard I tried one side would fall in and with out a front locker in the mud there was no hope of getting up. So like ammo said wee made the right call and turned around, this turned out to be harder that we all thought. For me in the 40 with Armstrong steering the 10 point turning had me gasping for air, wail Sam tried to turn around in the same spot just about losing his front end down the hill. At this point we made the decision to back the 80 down the hill with the flipped over truck at its base, across the pinch point and back up the steep hill turning around on it.

Quote of the trip: Ammo, “I thought for sure that I was going to see Sam flip over in me rear view when that wheel dropped into that rut.” This occurred when descending the second to last hill before the gatekeepers.

Best new experience: the 3rd water crossing. I was in the lead and like a dipsh** thought this water crossing will be just like the last 2. I put it in to lo then 4wd locked the rear and then started to crawl across it. When I got to the middle I noticed that me feet where getting wet. I looked down to see 5” of water over the door jam just a little scary.

After having the truck on 3 wheels at least 5-10 times I need to go wash out my shorts

More to come
