Just wanted to say hello to all. I am new to this forum but certainly not new to the 4wd empire. I have been bitten recently with the Landcruiser bug and think I am going to buy a 1989 FJ62 next weekend. Anyhow, I currently drive an 01 Tundra and it will break my heart to have to sell it, however, I feel it is the right thing to do. My fiancee and I are in the housing market and I feel the extra money would be helpful since the Tundra is paid off. So enough of my ranting, down to the point. I am currently running some PIAA 4000K bulbs in my truck in both the fogs and headlights. I absolutely love them and will never go back to stock or HID. I am wondering if some of you have some recommendations as to what PIAA types I should go with (Kelvin wise) for the Landcruiser. I am pretty happy with my 4000's but wonder if there is something better out there. Not sure if I should run a lower Kelvin for the high beams or vice versa. ALSO, I hear a lot of talk about Sylvania Superstars. Anyone recommend those over the PIAA's? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

folks on this list seem to hate PIAA's. I don't know why except they are expensive. I have have ahd them ALL. the 40 series, the 80 series and now the little 4" driving lights. I suggest the PIAA 80 series. If they had them in a 8" light I would prefer those over my Hella 4000's....but they only come in 6". Anyhow the 80 series are a great light adn well made. I recommend those...but they are over $300.00

I replaced mine with the sylvania superstars and it was an amazing difference. They are almost as bright as my KC slimlites. Am now adding the hella 4000. I have no good or bad experience with the piaa.
 
I've had both good and bad experiences with PIAA. Now, mind you I actually was "given" four sets of PIAAs way back when to test...
PIAA headlight replacement bulbs seem to not last as long as OEM, but the PIAA aux lights seem to last forever, and are very well made. I agree that the 80 series is where the lasting impression is at. The Pro 90's were a really nice system as well. With PIAA, they've shied away from the off road crowd over the years, and have gotten more into the foreign passenger cars (Honda, etc).
IPF also makes some incredible stuff out there, and is a more expedition "FJ6x" ready lighting system. Makes pretty much any PIAA look like a lightweight.
I think those issues have alot to do with the general consensus around here.

I have recommended silverstars before, I wouldn't now. Just about to replace them with an H1/H4 set up from danielsternlighting.
 
good info. While I would agree that PIAA's are pretty expensive, I think a good headlight is well worth the change. I am gonna look into the IPF's and the Fj6X's. Anyone else out there that would second the sylvania superstars? Thanks

That's what I forgot to add...dang, my future is dim.

Silverstars are fantastic headlights. I doubt you could find better.
 
My experience with Silverstars was not so good. I had a pair in my FJ55 and a pair in the wife's 4Runner. The ones on the 55 burned out in 4 months and the ones in the 4Runner burned out one at a time. One at 4 months and the other at 5.5 months.

The light output on the 55 was slightly better than stock, and was noticably better than stock on the 4Runner. But at double the price and 1/4 of the lifespan, I'll look elsewhere for beter light.

I have the GE version, bought them from Walmart on sale, they work great esp for the price I paid, I drive my truck minimally esp at night, but they are a huge improvement.
 
I use PIAA 520's as additional lighting. I will be upgrading my headlights to the Sylvania's once my current gloomy never-burn out lights actually fizzle out.

I think PIAA's got a bad wrap on Mud because people think they're a little pricey and do not last as long as they think they should. It does not help that many ricers seem to love them.:D

But I believe they manufacture/supply lights to Subaru's WRC team, which says a lot about at least some of their products.:hillbilly:
