I'm toying with getting a dog door for our new dog, but don't know squat about them. My main concern is that its hotter than blazes here in the summer, and I don't want anything that'll let in a constant draft of hot air. My back door is a pair of french doors, and there is a wall nearby that could be used as well. Suggestions?

you can get ones that you can opt to close...but they still let air in and out easily...not to mention small theifs

is that kinda like the mark of the beast?

We live in Tempe. We have a Hale Pet Door, installed in bottom window of French door. Has 2 clear pvc flaps with magnetic closing.

not cheap, mine's been installed 12 years. Just had to replace the flaps a couple months ago since they finally started cracking from constant daily use of 2 dogs and 1 cat.

The dual flaps *help* keep the outside environment outside, but hey, no hole in your wall or door will be great for energy efficiency. It's a convenience thing most of all.

On the burglar thing ... some friends of mine had a really fancy system, where the dog wore a collar with a transmitter on it that unlocked the doggie door when he got near it. It was kinda cool and freaky at the same time.

We have a neighbor with a similar system. Radio collar and a master switch for when they don't want the dogs to go out. Keeps the other critters from getting in the house. Not sure the cost.

Pet Door

We have a extra large pet door. We love it. It can be put in the wall also.
I think it's a Ideal Pet. Got it at Lowes for around $90.00. Not having a dog barking their head off beside the bed at night is flippin great.

If the power bill was to double, it would still be worth it. We have not seen any difference in power/heating bills. And this thing is huge.

However, pets can bring things in. We had a half eaten dead rabbit on the couch last month. Thanks to our 6 month old Great Dane.

I would think that not having a full size door opening on a regular basis would pretty much make up for a small constant draft.

We plan on putting one in for the Malamute next summer when we build our new home. I hope he does not provide us with any "gifts" Or worse, have a black bear try to follow him in.

you could just get a cat door and allow to dog to enlarge it when it trys to back out.
