Hi Gang,

I have searched Mud on this topic to no avail.

Is there a PCV valve on a 13BT? I have checked the PCV hose and cannot easily see.

The reason I ask is that I have "oil seeping" at the the #1 & #2 air cleaner hoses (the wide bore rubber hoses at the turbo intake and exit) AND at the PCV hose at both ends.

On a gasser, some of this could be due to a blocked (stuck) PCV valve. However, as this is a turbo diesel, I am wondering if my turbo seals/bearings have gone.

If any of you blokes could help with your experience, I'd be thankful.

Sincerely,

Bruce

Hi Bruce.

No valve. The crankcase is vented from the valve cover into the intake, pre-turbo. There will always be "some" blowby vapor. The amount will increase with wear and age, as more of the expanding combustion gases get by the rings.

Are the crossover clamps tight? This is the pressure side. The metal crossover tube has a dimpled surface and this may contribute if all is not tight.

What is your oil consumption like?
Do you get a puff of blue after idling a while, or on startup?
Is the crossover tube contaminated with oil (when you take it all apart).

Start your engine and when warm remove the vent tube where it enters pre-turbo. Does it look like a 5th cylinder, or is there simply a "little" vapor that comes out? This will eliminate blowby as the culprit.

After this, I would clean everything up, (take apart the crossover tube, inspect and clean everything up and put back together) (at the same time you might as well pull the cover and do a valve set) then run for a while. Watch for seepage again, then make a choice.

FWIW when I got my truck I had some good seepage on my crossover, with limited blowby. I took it apart, cleaned, inspected and reassembled. Some weepage came back. I was budgeting for a turbo rebuild. In the strange but true category I switched to Esso XD0/40 for the winter two winters ago, and the weepage reduced to the point where there was no sign. I still get a puff of blue, as the seals are weeping, but oil consumption is minimal. I will get it rebuild so I have a baseline, but I am in no rush at this point (knock on wood).

hth's some.

Hi Greg,

I saw you were on MUD just after I posted and was hoping you'd chime in. :)

The 13BT has 147,000 km and burns no measurable oil at all. On start up, there is white/blue for a few minutes on acceleration (till warmed up). She starts, even in winter, in what seems an engine turn - a split second. I've never even needed the glow plugs. I use Lucas oil conditioner.

I'll check as you suggest. I do think there could be a turbo oil seal issue but not urgent. I understand there is a Richmond based turbo rebuilder. Do you know the name?

And thanks again.
