i can't find it. is it on the valve cover? any pics would be great. and if you could tell me why she's suddenly hard to start and not wanting to idle (idling rough to the point of dying). i've since changed cap and button and fuel filter with no change. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

The PCV valve is located on the passenger side of the manifold... almost to the firewall. It sticks out from the block on a backwards "J" kind of piping. IIRC it is between the 5th and 6th spark plug locations.

It is probably pretty dirty (mine was) and may blend in with the hose that it is clamped to. The hose goes from the PCV valve up over the rear of the air cleaner.

Hope this makes sense. Good luck.

Before you change it, make sure you get the PCV AND the grommet that seals it in. It's not an easy find (the grommet) and if it's old, it'll be brittle and break up when you pull the PCV.

(As for location, maybe to clarify Jason a little, look to the left of your oil dipstick. hoses should run up under the breather and toward the intake manifold.)

I don't think your rough idle is going to be caused by this alone, especially with the almost dying thing (are you consuming a lot of oil?). I'd start looking for vac leaks, check your timing, etc. Check your breather element, too. If all is well there, the idle solenoid, which is the electrical do-dah (and the only electrical connection to your carb)

That said, this is all considering you have an FJ60, not a 62. If it's a 62, do a search, as there's a lot of good advice about typical problems with the fuel injection system.

Thanks for the help, Swank.

Yeah, I had a dried grommet... if yours is brittle, don't let any bits fall into the pipe (easier said than done). I ordered my PCV valve and grommet from Toyota.

I've heard the rattle test isn't the best one. In the FSM, it says to see if it'll blow air from the bottom end (the part that mounts into the engine) to the top, but not from the top to bottom (it's a bit of a check valve, in a way)

Cleaner will get it, but it's a $3 part, so I'm the type to change, just taking pride in the fact that it's the cheapest thing on the vehicle to replace. :D

you guys are great, thanks. the idle solenoid wouldn't affect the start-up process, would it? it takes @ 4-6 seconds of starter cranking to stumble into running presently. any more suggestions?

Yeah, I buy new ones too. But......if you want it that day, you can get by with cleaning.

Cheers.
