These were apparently spotted sitting out in Richmond near the Ice and Aquatic Centre at the end of No 6 Rd.

Yes, there are a few dealerships in Canada which sell them mainly to mines. Sheldon started a related thread from one spotted up at Cache Creek. Looked to me like it was just outside the Land Fill's maintenance shed. So even other industrial operators can buy them as industrial equiptment.

So these trucks are brought into our country and sold to mines for off-highway use, this raises a couple of curiosity questions. Why? have they finally figured out that the local Dodge, Ford and Chevy trucks suck? How come they can bring them in for the mines and not for the general public? either do it for all or piss off. That's just mean.

From what I understand, yes they figured out that the domestic trucks suck. These are smaller, have similar capacity, do not require as much maintenance/repair, and the real kicker is they meet emission requirements for mine duty.
They do not however meet Canadian safety standards for highway use, therefore cannot be (legally...koffMctuaguekoffkoff) be registered for "civilian" use.

Its the same in the US. Lots of places selling Japanese mini-trucks which can only be used off-road on farms and industrial. There is one place just across the border that only sells these JDMs.

Maybe more people should be asking their MPs if they believe in protectionism or free enterprise. Then ask them why they think UNEC standards are worse than Canadian standards. Ask them why Europesan built aircraft are considered safet and up to standard but their vehicles are dangerous. Then ask them whythey are still hiding their ugly automotive industry protectionist head behind the unproven excuse that our standards our better. Ask them why the automotive industry is babied along and why the forest industry (which employes more people) is left pretty much to be competitive or die.

Rant out. :deadhorse:

I know a guy that works contract at a diamond mine in NWT. He said they are almost fully converted to Toyota. The domestics had way to high of a breakage rate and are all full of stupid electronics stuff now that the mfg's will not delete off the trucks to make them simpler to diagnose. Who needs ABS, air bags, Auto door locks and back up sensors on a mine truck!

Actually, who needs that on any truck!
