So I was actually in the 80 Series Tech forum the other day, and came across a part time conversion install thread. Cool, since I've often thought about doing this. But then I remembered the expense. The kit from Slee comes out close to $800, and they come with what have been described as some not so great locking hubs.

Then I looked at who made the spool he put in: Lokka. What? Andrew runs a lokka in his rear diff, but I had no idea they made a part time spool. And the best part, you can buy just the spool for $300. And that's with shipping. If you scrounge up some used 60 series hubs, you could have a part time kit for less than half what it would cost from Slee or Marks 4WD.

Just thought I'd pass that along, since I had no idea that option was available, and it makes it a much more realistic option at those prices. I have my eye set on it for the future, not necessarily for the supposed increase it performance/mileage, but to mainly save wear/tear on the front axle.

Yep. Lokka makes a PT kit with hubs, as well. I have no idea if their hubs are good or not, but I am happy with my Lokka rear locker, both in terms of performance and quality of manufacture.

They also make a front automatic locker (unlocker) for the 80. you can get this with their part time kit for about $600....so if you want a part time, fully locked 80, you can convert for less than a grand.

If you go for doing your own kit I would be interested in following the build thread. Keep us posted.

I'm new to this... I bought the Aisin hubs for the 80 and I'm wondering what else I need to convert it to be able to use 2WD? I have a 93 with factory front n rear lockers, changed out the 4.10 gears front n rear to 4.88 gears, rebuilt the front n back end, went through everything. I keep reading that I need a sensor kit to keep abs n part time spool? The hubs are in and just want to finish what was started! Help??

I'm not sure what's needed as far as keeping the ABS intact since I have an FJ80 and no ABS. But you do need the spool and the new bearing that will need to be pressed into it. Also, for the 93 and up transfer case, you will need to remove the viscous coupler from the rear section of the transfer case (something else the FJ80 doesn't have).

Haven't done this yet, but it's on my list after I return from Korea since I have to pull the rear section off the transfer since its leaking.
