After years of being apart it's time to get the 40 back together. I need to paint the transmission cover, tank cover and the floor of the 40. I did some rust removal. I want to use paint and come close to match exterior which is not in bad shape. I guess the original paint was single stage enamel. I'm going to paint it myself in the garage. i'm looking for some help with paint products to use. Some parts have been taking down to metal other will be just rough up original paint. It will be my first paint job. Any help and suggestions would be great thanks

I guess some other questions I have are. How much paint do I need to buy to paint just inside. Will a single stage hold up ok on the floor?

Do you have a compressor and spray gun, etc?

I did my interior 20 years ago with single stage PPG and using a Harbor Freight touch up gun. Still looks new and was cheap and easy. I'm just guessing, but I would think that a quart of paint, when the reducer is added, would be enough.

one quart is more than enough.

bare metal needs to be coated with epoxy primer or self etching primer or something made for bare metal... don't want that rust to come back! once you've got a good primed surface you can spray the color on top. Some paint shops will mix the paint for you in a rattle can so even if you odn't have a compressor or paint gun you can still spray a two part paint.

I've used these and they work well in hard to reach areas like the glovebox or under the dash. There is no reason why you couldn't use them to paint the entire floor. Get extra reducer to clean the glass jars though. The actual can on top will last about 2-3 full glass jars (6 oz jars). So you would probably need 3 pressurized canisters to do the job.

Yes I have a compressor and a couple of the harbor freight HVLP Guns. I was a thinking of using the ACE oil base paint mentioned in an other thread. I was worried about using epoxy paint because I don't have self breathing mask to spray it.

never knew there was a concern with spraying epoxy primer... I just use a good 3m respirator - like 40 bucks from lowes.

that oil base paint is like rustoleom... it never really hardens. get a quart of automotive grade paint (acrylic urethane from ppg would run you like $50 for a quart with hardener)

So if i have this right.
1 quart epoxy primer
1 quart high build primer
1 quart color
Plus reducer and hardener, mix cups , some stir sticks, strainers, tack rags and some sand paper.
Should that cover it?

Honestly, when I did mine, I used 400 grit wet or dry sand paper, wiped down surface with Acetone, masked and painted, single stage. Has held up well. I did get some Rustoleum a couple of years ago, mixed to color match, and have used it to touch up the rear bed that I'm always scratching up.

I was just thinking to fill any pits. I have read some epoxy primers are just one thin coat.
