paint/rust issue

Hey all, so my friend is having body issues with her mustang. I had been working on my landcruiser and didn't realize the grinding dust was hitting her car. I should have cleared the area beforehand. Anyway, the car has developed small rust spots around the rear. What can I do to fix/end this? Strip the whole back section of the car and repaint? Anything easier to do? I'm used to just cutting out sections to replace, but this rust is just surface rust that's spread out. Here's some pics:

Did you try buffing it out? I would think that its just the metal dust that settled on the paint and started to rust. Probably just on the surface...hopefully anyway.

Had to replace both passenger windows in the wife's Honda after grinding next to it once. I even knew better, dammit.

I would try washing it first then buffing it.

That rust is probably the metal that you 'ground out' and not the metal of the car itself rusting.

Looks similar to "rail dust" on some new cars.....comes from the railroad tracks when cars are transported. Most common way I've heard of to fix this is to use clay bar and then buff. Keep the surface wet and run the clay bar over the top of the surface. Good luck !

Does it feel abrasive when you wipe your hand across the affected areas? I ask because the heat from the grinding residue (very ferrous material) might have fused deep into the clear. I would try using the clay bar or even some light rubbing compound to start with.

Thanks for the tips. I've tried some turtle wax rubbing compound which works, but it will be much more effective with a buffer. I'm gonna try that next.

can't explain how much better a clay bar works for this I did that to my 96 GT once and the clay bar kit from the local auto store, was like 25 bucks and it made the car shine after i did that and rewaxed it.

I'm interested in trying that too. Is there a specific name I should ask for or will they know if I ask for a clay bar kit?

Wal-mart has clay bar kits . Just a suggestion, I use clay from the craft supply stores. Same stuff but much cheaper. You can let your kids make little animals and stuff, then use them to scrub the metal off your car. Make sure that you use a lubricator of some sort. Soapy water, detail spray, make it slippery then run the clay over it. The clay removes any wax or polish you had on there so you'll need to wax/polish after you are done.
