mike,
thanks my addy is on the way...i have not opened up the other side so i do not know what is in there...i have a quick question....inside the hub there were two large nuts....they were not tight....i fished them off of the spindle?...with my fingers...should these be tight when i reassemble?....also...how much grease is too much?...thanks for your quick response...aside from the mess so far this is not a bad project....

marc

They need to be tight, I have the torque specs somewhere. I didn't tighten much up when I reassembled it, knowing you'd just have to take it apart again. Do you have a hub socket or do ya need to borrow one?

Mike

what size is that hub socket?...i will pick one up at napa...or somewhere...mike what is the spec for tightening that dude?...let me know....thanks all

marc

hub socket = 54mm (edit: 2 1/8 inch)

torque spec = Ranksi had a thread about this not long ago. I don't recall what the concensus was and I don't have a manual...

I have a couple spare hubs also if you need more parts...

thanks matt... the rebuilding process is really going along nicely...got everything apart on one side...i have been cleaning and wire brushing all the parts...hope to paint a few tonight and once i get the parts from mike i will reassemble...not a mechanically hard job but damn it is messy!!!! i hope to have it done by the weekend...then i can take jakes cruiser out of service and install new axel...power steering and a 4" lift...that will take me awhile...you should come down one weekend and check out osage city....of coarse you are welcome to help wrench too.:D

Here is a link to the discussion (https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=83623) when I went through the process...can't say we came to a consensus. I'm still not sure mine came out right cuz the reading on the fish scale seemed kindda high when I was done.

I have the green light for any weekend in dec. When you line up all your parts let me know and I will come down and help for a day...

matt,
that is great...as soon as i have all parts in hand i will let you know...i need to get the axel rebuild done...that is the main part for the swap...thanks

marc

I dont know exactly which rig is yours or what type of front axle it has but I have done front knuckle rebuilds about 10 times on mine and different rigs due to several things, wear and tear, broken 3rds with it being a situation of, "Well, I'm tearing it apart anyway, I will just do the knuckles," type of deal, to broken hysteer arms and many other reasons.

It is really easy after you have done it a couple times.

I can help to but usually only on Sundays as I am only off on Sunday and Mondays.

thanks for the offer fat...yellow 1968 fj40 with young man driving (my son jake)...the axel is a 72 with disk brakes...got from mike c...the rebuild is comming along ok...i will be taking it back apart tomorrow...i did not fill the spaces required with grease...no big deal...this is not hard and i believe you that once you have done it a time or two it will be much easier...i am cleaning and painting things as i go so that is slowing the process...once i get to the other side i should move along pretty good...i should be ready to set the preload tomorrow and complete putting the 1 side back together....however, once this is done than the real fun begins...gonna install this axel inplace of the one that currently resides under the cruiser...hook up all the new brake stuff to make the disks functional...add power streering and a 4"lift...so you are welcome any weekend in december...i will never turn away help or spectators!

'78.... but who's counting :D

Are ya gonna be around Thursday? I gotta go to Toe-peeky to welcome home a buddy returning fom Iraq. I'll prolly stop at Expert and use my gift certificates from FN and If'n you're ready, drop off a trailer since I'm headed that way.
If'n ya ain't ready for it that's cool too, we'll do it later.

Mike

marc you have a welder? lets install that lift then cut'n turn the new axle housing before you put it all back together... just an idea.
