So the check engine light blinked on and off couple times and then went away on our trip home from Texas. I decided to stop at an O’Reilly and had them read the codes and the light came in and stayed on for too many faults. Their scanner said it’s P0304, and recommended changing the plug and possibly the coil pack as well. I noticed a momentary hesitation once or twice from the time the light first flashed but it seemed minor so I decided to press on to Oklahoma City, 90 minutes ahead, to get OEM parts since the O’Reilly didn’t stock them.

About half an hour later the truck really started hesitating bad and then lost a lot of power. Acceleration was virtually nonexistent, when when it shifted down. So I pulled off the interstate and a stuck in the little town of Hydro trying to figure out where to have it towed.

I have the tools I need to replace plugs But haven’t had to do the coils since I bought it two years ago. My wife wants to get home so for the sake of saving time and stress I’m hoping the Toyota dealer will work on the Lexus (the one by my house will not, so it’s an hour drive up the road to avoid paying 40% more for parts and labor for the exact same job).

Any advice would be appreciated.

Swap a coil (and then the coil and the plug if needed) from one cylinder to the other see if the code moves with it. Just had this experience with my wife’s car ( not a cruiser) and swapping the bad plug fixed it.

Should've bought a plug and coil at O'Reilly...they carry denso and I haven't had an import direct brand coil fail yet....they also carry standard which is decent.....at least to get you home.....this "OEM only" mentality is ridiculous ...... good luck on this adventure!

They didn’t have any Denso in stock for the spark plugs or the coil packs. I would’ve had to wait until the next day (today) anyway, just in a much smaller town, with fewer options.

I don’t believe in coincidence, but after I called insurance for the tow to the nearest dealer, it just so “happens” that a friend from 20 years ago, from when I was stationed in Alaska, has an adult son that lives less than five miles from the dealership. I knew he lived in Oklahoma, but not the exact city, until he saw our Facebook post about the breakdown and reached out to us. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. We had to be towed to his house because the dealership locks the gate of their lot at night. So instead of leaving my LX470 alone in some other commercial lot, I got to have it in a nice, safe neighborhood. And we’ll get to spend the morning catching up, since until last night we hadn’t been each other in 15 years.

So it turns out that it had a bad knock sensor as well. And I decided to have them do the brakes while it’s in the shop.

Ok, I'll give it to ya....that's a great story! Sounds like the perfect turn of events(other than getting towed obviously! )
